Barclaycard has fixed its issues and an exclusive special offer is coming

On Monday we ran three articles on the brand new, and very exciting, Barclaycard Avios Mastercard credit cards.

Things didn’t go well. As you will know if you tried to apply:

  • the application website was not functioning
  • when it was functioning, acceptance did not seem as high as we were hoping, so we are working with Barclays to optimise acceptance for HfP

Barclaycard has fixed its problems and a special offer is coming

Barclaycard is, of course, very unhappy that this has happened.

They have told us that we will see a special sign-up offer for a very limited period at a later point. This will hopefully encourage everyone who admitted defeat after facing problems this week to sign up.

In a statement yesterday, Barclaycard told us:

We apologise to Head for Points readers for the technical difficulties experienced when we launched our Barclaycard Avios and Avios Plus credit cards. We can confirm that this has now been resolved. We will be coming back to you with an exclusive offer within the next few weeks.”

If your application has been rejected, you may want to reapply in few weeks time, once we have worked with Barclaycard to improve acceptance for our readers.

If you want to try your luck now, perhaps because you have some spending coming up which you need to trigger the sign-up bonus, it’s best to check your eligibility first using their free tool – the information is reused in the application so it doesn’t take long, and there is no impact to your credit file.

You can check your eligibility and apply for the free Barclaycard Avios credit card (5,000 Avios bonus) here. You can check your eligibility and apply for the Barclaycard Avios Plus credit card (25,000 Avios bonus) here.

If you missed our content on Monday, the first of our three articles on the Barclaycard Avios Mastercards is here.

Bear with us. We’ll keep you in the loop. In the medium and long term, these two cards will be an excellent addition to the wallet or purse of all UK Avios collectors.

To learn more about the cards, read our Barclaycard Avios Mastercard credit card review here:

The representative APR is 29.9% variable.

…. and our Barclaycard Avios Plus Mastercard credit card review here:

The representative APR is 80.1% APR variable, including the annual fee.  The representative APR on purchases is 29.9% variable.

Amex BAPP card is still preferable; the 2 for 1 companion voucher is undoubtedly better – provided you have a companion to travel with!

Depending on how IHG Rewards improves/devalues in March/April this year – I may get the free Avios Barclaycard.

    • VINZ says:

Surely, but it’s always good to have another option with the same earning rate as BAPP. Especially where they don’t accept Amex.

      • meta says:

It’s not the same earning rate however. You don’t get extra Avios for BA spend which is very likely going to be a major contribution to your voucher due to high surcharges on BA! You’re loosing 1.5 Avios for each pound. You also can’t use the upgrade voucher for F.

  • Philip says:

I applied on Tuesday and the card arrived yesterday. So I’m happy with the service. I’m not self employed, I’m an employee and my Experian is in the high 900s. If that helps answer any questions.

    • VINZ says:

I applied on Tuesday and didn’t get an answer. My latest Experian report was 999 out of 999!

      • Pb says:

If you are self employed they dislike you .

      • AndrewW says:

I had the same and decided to call them. About 1 hour on the phone but they did confirm that I had been accepted but for security reasons could not tell me the credit limit. Now awaiting card in the post!

  • Rtid says:

I just got a SMS from Barclays

Thanks for your request to switch to a Barclaycard Avios Plus card. We’re processing that for you now and we’ll be in touch again soon.

    Re: Barclaycard Systems:-

Not directly relevant to the new launch, obviously, but…

The previous owner of our house died, I believe, nearly 2 years ago. Barclaycard have sent out several letters since we bought the house 9 months ago, reminding him that there is an outstanding balance. I have opened a couple of these letters by mistake, as they turn up usually around the same time as my own Barclaycard bill – the amount due is £20 and a few pence!
I finally phoned Barclaycard, since they seemed not to take any notice of the fact that letters were being returned marked “Addresee deceased”.
Barclaycard have finally taken some note – the letter that arrived today is addressed to “The Executor” instead of to the former owner. It is being returned, unopened, with a remark “not at this address”…
Surely it makes no sense at all for them to be pusuing a debt of that size two years after the death of the card holder?

  • Harry Holden says:

Do Barclays and BA outsource to the same IT company?

    • vol says:

Did someone ask you for your flight number instead of your account number? 😀

  • Roberto says:

    I phoned.
28 mins on hold and was told I needed to speak to another team who cut me off.
They really are a shower of you know what.

  • NvT1115 says:

Happy to wait for the bigger bonus

  • Andy S says:

I already have an Barclaycard Hilton Honnors card and it seems you can’t apply for the Barclaycard Avios card unless I apply to change my Hilton Honnors card to the Avios card.

I would much rather they just reduce the credit limit on my Hilton Honnors card.

    • Jonathan says:

      +1

I’d also rather have an additional card rather have to scrap one my existing cards altogether in order to get one of these new ones
