Barclaycard has fixed its issues and an exclusive special offer is coming

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

On Monday we ran three articles on the brand new, and very exciting, Barclaycard Avios Mastercard credit cards.

Things didn’t go well. As you will know if you tried to apply:

  • the application website was not functioning
  • when it was functioning, acceptance did not seem as high as we were hoping, so we are working with Barclays to optimise acceptance for HfP

Barclaycard has fixed its problems and a special offer is coming

Barclaycard is, of course, very unhappy that this has happened.

They have told us that we will see a special sign-up offer for a very limited period at a later point. This will hopefully encourage everyone who admitted defeat after facing problems this week to sign up.

In a statement yesterday, Barclaycard told us:

We apologise to Head for Points readers for the technical difficulties experienced when we launched our Barclaycard Avios and Avios Plus credit cards. We can confirm that this has now been resolved. We will be coming back to you with an exclusive offer within the next few weeks.”

If your application has been rejected, you may want to reapply in few weeks time, once we have worked with Barclaycard to improve acceptance for our readers.

If you want to try your luck now, perhaps because you have some spending coming up which you need to trigger the sign-up bonus, it’s best to check your eligibility first using their free tool – the information is reused in the application so it doesn’t take long, and there is no impact to your credit file.

You can check your eligibility and apply for the free Barclaycard Avios credit card (5,000 Avios bonus) here. You can check your eligibility and apply for the Barclaycard Avios Plus credit card (25,000 Avios bonus) here.

If you missed our content on Monday, the first of our three articles on the Barclaycard Avios Mastercards is here.

Bear with us. We’ll keep you in the loop. In the medium and long term, these two cards will be an excellent addition to the wallet or purse of all UK Avios collectors.

To learn more about the cards, read our Barclaycard Avios Mastercard credit card review here:

The representative APR is 29.9% variable.

…. and our Barclaycard Avios Plus Mastercard credit card review here:

The representative APR is 80.1% APR variable, including the annual fee.  The representative APR on purchases is 29.9% variable.

  • L Allen says:

Does this new offer include something for existing Barclaycard account holders? I recall you mentioning that there would be something for us too?

    • Andrew says:

That’s already live in the app.

      • Roberto says:

Not for everyone Andrew. You keep posting that its live but it’s not universally so.

  • Russ says:

what do you think you are missing out on; you’ll be made partner, use of the company jet, pay off your mortgage.

no body is forcing you or forced you to take out this card. for those who’ve lucked out then it’s a reminder it’s always prudent to wait till the dust settles after a new launch.

  • BC says:

Judging by reactions on here, interesting case study of the importance of relative wealth vs. absolute wealth. We were happy with the offer when it was released on Monday.

  • ChasP says:

if i were Barclays i wouldnt be too worried about upsetting customer that have already applied
These are clearly chasing bargains so are very unlikely to be good long term customers and even if they swear never to use Barclays again they wll probably be back at the next offer

    • VINZ says:

Not really. I’ve been a loyal customer of Barclays’ for 12 years now. I have a premier account so not a student accountholder. I would like for Barclays not to upset me.
Having said that, I’ll cancel the application if it went through and reapply if it’s worth it.

    • bafan says:

Sums up some people quite nicely! Reminds me of the people who used to shout at the Easyjet staff on Airline 😂.

  • Harrier25 says:

All I crave is as many Hilton Honors points as I can get my hands on, hence I am happy with my Hilton Barclaycard, Virgin Atlantic credit card and my current Amex earning strategies. This new Avios card has no real benefits to me.

    • Cranzle says:

Genuine question; what type of redemptions do you use the points for? I’m interested in identifying sweet spots

  • Wanderlust says:

I tried to apply on Wednesday, my phone did something strange on the last page so I don’t know if the application went through…. Contacted Barclays and it turns out they don’t know either 🙈

I was going to switch to the Premier Current Account but this whole situation has made me reconsider. Not sure if the Avios are worth the hassle of being a Barclays customer!

  • CatchFlightsNotFeelings says:

I applied on Tuesday, got the “we need to do more checks”. No confirmation email ect, then at 4am this morning i got an email saying “here is your Barclaycard statement” – despite no checks showing on my credit report, no card or acceptance letter sent through or anything. What is going on?

    • Doug M says:

I got the same more checks message. Nothing since, but having just checked the Barclay’s app this morning I apparently was accepted and now have a card account.

  • RTS says:

    Good job I got declined…
