Barclaycard has fixed its issues and an exclusive special offer is coming

On Monday we ran three articles on the brand new, and very exciting, Barclaycard Avios Mastercard credit cards.

Things didn’t go well. As you will know if you tried to apply:

  • the application website was not functioning
  • when it was functioning, acceptance did not seem as high as we were hoping, so we are working with Barclays to optimise acceptance for HfP

Barclaycard has fixed its problems and a special offer is coming

Barclaycard is, of course, very unhappy that this has happened.

They have told us that we will see a special sign-up offer for a very limited period at a later point. This will hopefully encourage everyone who admitted defeat after facing problems this week to sign up.

In a statement yesterday, Barclaycard told us:

We apologise to Head for Points readers for the technical difficulties experienced when we launched our Barclaycard Avios and Avios Plus credit cards. We can confirm that this has now been resolved. We will be coming back to you with an exclusive offer within the next few weeks.”

If your application has been rejected, you may want to reapply in few weeks time, once we have worked with Barclaycard to improve acceptance for our readers.

If you want to try your luck now, perhaps because you have some spending coming up which you need to trigger the sign-up bonus, it’s best to check your eligibility first using their free tool – the information is reused in the application so it doesn’t take long, and there is no impact to your credit file.

You can check your eligibility and apply for the free Barclaycard Avios credit card (5,000 Avios bonus) here. You can check your eligibility and apply for the Barclaycard Avios Plus credit card (25,000 Avios bonus) here.

If you missed our content on Monday, the first of our three articles on the Barclaycard Avios Mastercards is here.

Bear with us. We’ll keep you in the loop. In the medium and long term, these two cards will be an excellent addition to the wallet or purse of all UK Avios collectors.

To learn more about the cards, read our Barclaycard Avios Mastercard credit card review here:

The representative APR is 29.9% variable.

…. and our Barclaycard Avios Plus Mastercard credit card review here:

The representative APR is 80.1% APR variable, including the annual fee.  The representative APR on purchases is 29.9% variable.

  • Neil says:

An update / datapoint here from the wife’s application of last Monday (referred with five day wait)..we got an email from Barclaycard yesterday confirming approval, with a very good credit limit.
As I said in my original note on Monday, I can’t have one in my name as I have an existing relationship with Barclaycard (HH and one other card).

  • AS says:

I’ve lost track of what existing Barclaycard card holders are supposed to do. A few days ago Rob’s advice was to hold off because a reduced bonus would become available for us. Did that ever happen, or are we still waiting for this?

    • Rob says:

If you are selected for this, it will show in the Barclaycard app as an option for you. Bonus is 20% of the standard bonus, so 1k / 5k.

      • Stephen says:

Is there any indication as to how they select or if they are still working on it? Is having not used the card for more than year bad or good or not part of their selection?

  • AM says:

Having applied online and received instant approval for the Avios Plus card, I then received two separate confirmation emails with different card number endings ….I haven’t received my car, but was concerned that somehow BC systems may have logged two separate applications. Having spoken to them via Chat, they assure me I have only one card and one successful application, but they weren’t able to explain why I received two different emails with different card numbers.

I suppose I’ll wait for my card to arrive and in the meantime, check my credit file.

  • Georgi Aleshanov says:

Is the design vertical or horizontal? Or do we get to choose this?

    • Rob says:

No choice. It is vertical but the we are using horizontal images because they fit better.

  • RoryB says:

Got accepted last Tuesday and got the confirmation through but still no sign of the card. Suspect there will be quite the backlog for Barclaycard to work through

  • Tim says:

I still have No Options Available on the Barclaycard App when trying to change card 🙁

  • Safety Card says:

Despite a pretty perfect credit score I got declined for this. Which may well have been part of their bugs. I’ve since got a letter saying that I can’t apply again for another 6 months. Is there a contact at Barclaycard who might be able to look at this, I would like to apply.

  • Lee says:

I still don’t have the option on the app to change to a card, so I phoned Premier Banking and they said it can only be done online in the Offers section, so I checked online and I don’t have the offer to switch cards. Now the only option I have is to cancel my existing card and reapply for the Avios card, but, it’ll be a full new application and “I may not be eligible if I do that”. How hard can Barclays make this? Perhaps they don’t actually want the custom. I’m done with it now, what an awful launch this has been.
