Apologies for application issues with Barclaycard Avios Mastercard

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

Yesterday we ran three articles on the brand new, and very exciting, Barclaycard Avios Mastercard credit cards.

As soon as we’d published them, the Barclaycard application website collapsed. At the time of writing (10pm) it is still not fully functioning. It may or may not be working when you read this.

I’m sorry for the inconvenience. We are in close contact with Barclaycard and as soon as everything is good to go we will let you know.

Are you an existing Barclaycard holder?

In our article yesterday we said that existing Barclaycard holders would need to cancel their card and wait six months if they wanted the sign-up bonus on the new card.

It turns out that Barclaycard has a Plan B for existing cardholders which will go live in a few days. We should be able to share full details soon, but basically there will be a route which will allow you to get the Avios cards and receive a bonus. It will be a smaller bonus than the one given to new customers, but it will be better than nothing. We will run an article on this as soon as the process is live.

For everyone else …. we’ll let you know as soon as applications are open.

If you want to try again now, in case it got fixed overnight, you can apply for the free Barclaycard Avios credit card (5,000 Avios bonus) here. You can apply for the Barclaycard Avios Plus credit card (25,000 Avios bonus) here.

If you missed our content yesterday, the first of our three articles on the Barclaycard Avios Mastercards is here.

  • Daniel says:

I called Barclaycard and they’ve told me if I can’t see it in the app as an existing customer, I wont be able to transfer to it. There goes 11 years of loyalty to them.

    • Ian says:

Be patient….and don’t believe what the call centre staff tell you. If mine and others’ experiences are anything to go by, options will appear in your app soon enough.

  • Peter S says:

I’d applied and got an error stating they had all my details and they would be in contact in a few days… anyone in similar position and received an email confirmation or anything? Will have to wait it out a few days I guess then call them.

  • Andrew says:

The option just appeared on my Barclaycard app to change from Platinum to either of the Avios cards with the bonus of 1000 or 5000 – this has only just updated as only an hour or so ago it was only offering me the usual 0.25% Rewards card, as it was yesterday. So keep checking in case they are releasing in batches. When switching, there is no credit check etc, you will be sent a new card after your next statement date – so presumably you don’t start earning Avios until that date and the 3 month clock doesn’t start until then.

  • Jimbob says:

Hi all – I’ve seen some others indicate delays in receiving emails, but they all seem to have been resolved by now. I applied sat night at 8pm, received a success message on the browser but am yet to receive any email. Should I try again or just be patient? Thanks!

    • Jimbob says:

Oops – meant to say *last* night…

      • BKER says:

I had similar issue where I passed eligibility check, submitted the application and received message saying successful but additional checks needed and would hear back in 5 days. After reading some comments here, I contacted Barclaycard to be told there was no record of any application. However, they have completed both soft and hard searches on my credit file which I have asked them to remove…

        • Jimbob says:

          Thank you.

          • Jimbob says:

For anyone in a similar position, I called Barclaycard – they have my application details and I was told I will receive further updates by post, including T&Cs that I need to sign and return.

  • iamlost says:

I still want to know what date they use to work out the 6 month gap.

    • Rob says:

Ring them and ask when they think you cancelled. You then have certainty.

  • Mike79 says:

Managed to change mine via the App. Offered 3 cards, 2x Avios plus the Platinum

  • Roberto says:

Tried to swap via the app and……

    No options available
We don’t have other options available for you at the moment. This may be due to recent changes on your account, such as your card being reported lost or stolen or if you’ve requested a new PIN in the last 10 days.

    (Which I have not)

    • Harrier25 says:

Yeah, I get the same….oh well, Barclays loss.

    • Gavin says:

Same here, although maybe it’s because I’ve only just downloaded the app. I’ll try again in a few days / next week.

    • Ian says:

If you look back through the chat you’ll see many people have had this issue but it eventually gets resolved and you’ll be given the opportunity to change your card…just keep trying. Patience is a virtue, don’t they say?

    • Lee says:

I just checked mine (again) and still have the same message about no options available. I’m bored with it now, might as well stick to what I have.

  • Aston100 says:

I applied successfully almost 20 hours ago.
Not received an email as yet. Obviously checked spam folder.

    • NorthernLass says:

+1 over 24 hours now. I’ll see if the card turns up in the next few days then chase it if not.
