Teesside International Airport drops its £6 facility fee

Teesside International Airport, which is currently in the middle of a major redevelopment programme, has dropped its unpopular £6 ‘facility fee’.

This was, effectively, an additional charge made to depart from the airport. All passengers had to buy a £6 pass and would not be allowed past security without one.

Introduced in 2010, it was to “help support the continued operation of the airport and secure its sustainable future.”

Teesside Airport drops hated £6 facility fee

Such charges are not rare but are usually hidden. Heathrow currently charges £26.67 per passenger on a flight to Berlin for example – imagine what would happen if all passengers were forced to buy a £26.67 pass from a vending machine to get through security. Instead, it is baked into the cost of your ticket.

Low cost carriers won’t stand for this. They want to have a reputation for low fares which means that they are unwilling to collect a £6 ‘facility fee’ on behalf of the airport. The only way for small airports like Teesside to get this money is by charging it separately.

Luckily, anyone flying from Teesside International from June 2021 will not have to pay the £6 fee. This is not yet reflected on the airport website.

102 on my Amex Gold. I suspect that we get more offers on this side of the pond.

    • Oh! Matron! says:

Are you permanently in SJC (aka The Terminal) or just passing…. Quite a nice little airport although I think it’s over a kilometer from one end of the terminal to the other

  • Dubious says:

70 here on my regular Amex Rewards card

  • TeesTraveller says:

Only 75 offers on my Amex Platinum. The problem for me is that they are virtually all for high-end brands that I would never use. Compared to some, I’m not a heavy Amex user (maybe £35k spend a year) but I also live in a small town in the North of England. Some of these brands are not even on my radar and I’d be more interested in Amex putting their efforts behind getting acceptance at B&Q and Greggs.

My feeling is that I got more ‘normal’ offers when I had Amex Gold.

    82 offers on my PRG

Oh and great news about Teesside Airport. When the schedule gets going we will have domestic flights to LHR, ABZ, BHD, BRS, SOU, NQY and JER plus a 3 daily KLM to Amsterdam and holiday flights to Corfu, Alicante and Palma. A far cry from the 5 flights a day a few years ago.

The terminal is currently being refurbished (2 lounges) and the airport has just installed ultra modern bag scanners too.

71 offers on my Centurion, three saved.

Norwich “Airport Development Fee” is an equally unpopular £10. It doesn’t show any signs of going away…

    • Doug M says:

Is this fee made clear when you book?

      • Pete M says:

Knock (Ireland West) also adds a “Development Fee” of €10. Often more than an FR flight from there! 🙂

      • Nick says:

It doesn’t have to be made clear if it’s not charged by the airline.

  • Graeme says:

68 on BAPP, 5 on Gold. One or two of interest.
