Discounted MeliaRewards points on Amazon – 4* London hotel for £70, 4* New York for £64

For the last couple of years, MeliaRewards has been selling points very cheaply via Amazon over Black Friday.  The offers run on one or both of the UK or Spanish sites.

The price of MeliaRewards points has just dropped sharply on the UK site this morning although, oddly, it isn’t marked as reduced.  This may be the 2020 Black Friday deal starting early.

EDIT:  Stock comes and goes.  If it is sold out on Amazon UK you can CLICK HERE to buy on Amazon DE.  Delivery is very quick and you can log in to amazon.de using your UK account details.

Buy Melia points on Amazon

Points come in the form of gift cards you deposit into your MeliaRewards account.  Here are the current prices:

35,000 points for £103 – £2.94 per 1,000

55,000 points for £161 – £2.92 per 1,000

For comparison, the 55,000 points package has been at £290 for most of 2020.

You can check the price and availability on this page of UK Amazon site.

The instructions were simple enough that even my rudimentary (ie non existent) Spanish could follow them:

You log into the Melia website and head to ‘My Points’

Filter the earning and spending options by ‘Shopping’

Click on Amazon.  As well as explaining how to redeem your points for amazon.co.uk gift cards, there is a box to deposit your gift card.

Can you get value paying £161 for 55,000 MeliaRewards points?

Oh yes.

Of course, with rates currently rock bottom due to covid, the value for short term stays may not always be there.  If you buy now for bookings later in 2021, however, you should do nicely.

Having spent a lot of time exploring the MeliaRewards redemption chart, it is not as random as it first seems.  It is simply that hotels have totally weird redemption values which makes them appear random.

MeliaRewards points Amazon

INNSiDE New York, which we reviewed here, is just over 22,000 points per nightThere is real value here – cash rates are typically around £300 per night in the Summer (although who knows how Summer 2021 will go?) whilst you would be paying £64 if you redeemed gift card points!

In London, the Melia White House is 27,440 points per night.  This works out at (x £2.92 per 1,000) £80.12.  On 24th June, for some reason, it drops to 24,000 points (£70) when the cash price is £297.

The trendy ME London on the Strand is 47,040 points per night.  This makes it a laughably cheap, for a hotel of this standard, £137 per night.

Outside London, INNSiDE Manchester – which we reviewed here – is 18,757 points, or £55.  This is in line with cash pricing at present but this hotel is usually substantially more expensive.

INNSiDE Newcastle, which opens next month, is also 18,757 points.

There are real opportunities for a super-cheap Summer 2021 holiday in Spain or elsewhere in the Med

Being a Spanish company, Melia clearly has a huge number of Spanish properties, both in cities and in beach resorts.  This promotion could be an opportunity to lock in a deal for next year.

What you CAN’T do is transfer these points to Avios or to anything else.  They are ringfenced for hotel stays.   You also need to note that the hotel only offers a few rooms per night at the points prices above – once those have gone, rather like the way Hilton Honors works, redemptions are priced off a revenue based system which is much less attractive.

This is how I used my points in 2018

In 2018, I bought 55,000 points for €165 via a similar offer, albeit from the Amazon Spain site.  I used 48,500 for two nights at the Melia White House for my brother.  This was during Wimbledon and the cash rates were over £250 per night.

Surprisingly, after this stay I was able to transfer the remaining points to Avios at 10:3.  This got me another 2,000+ Avios.

My total return on €165 was therefore £500-worth of hotel rooms plus 2,000+ Avios.  Not bad!

I wouldn’t buy these points totally speculatively, but if you are fairly sure you can use them then this is a very good dealThe link to the Amazon page is here.  I have no idea how long the price will remain this low or if the Spanish site will join in with a similar deal at some point.

  • Nerd says:

35000 points is £2.94 per 1000 unless my calculator is broken

    • Andrew M says:

That’s my calculation as well but no one else has commentated on it so I’m starting to doubt myself now!

  • Alex Dickinson says:

I have actually been looking at this hotel in New York – 10 days in June even with a 50% discount they are running currently comes in at £1680 or £2288B&B both fully refundable. I could buy 4 x vouchers which would cost £644 or 9 vouchers for £1449 for the B&B room. My question is if i book a room with points and then cancel, does the original expiry date of said points hold or does it reset from the date of cancellation?

  • Sina says:

Only 8 left in stock!? 🤓

  • Super Secret Stuff says:

Very interested in new york, with 10% discount at morrisons would work out at £290 ish for 5 nights. Not to be turned down!

However, how easy is it to actually get that rate? I have never used them before and dont have a Melia account so cant check. Would really appreciate peoples views!

    • MattB says:

We’ve stayed in NY twice and had a booking for this year we cancelled. Never had trouble getting the lowest points rate booking during school holidays when making a reservation more than 6 months out.

Good location too, only a few mins walk from Penn Station which is on the direct line to Newark.

      • Matt B says:

Although last time I had to redeem at 26k per night so a bit more expensive, and the dates i’m looking to book speculatively for the end of 2021are similar.

  • Letsfly says:

On this topic, does anyone how to transfer out the points I bought last year which expire in a couple of weeks?
The card transferring points must have at least one points movement that is not related to bonus points is the message I get…

    • Andreas says:

just a thought, but try buying points directly from melia.com perhaps, the minimum? Or a Melia points transfer from somewhere else?

    • MattB says:

If you are happy to keep just buy 1000 for 5 euro to extend for another year

  • Anuj says:

    Can’t find the 50,000 points only 35,000

  • Andrew says:

I’m a bit unclear on the expiry of the points. I bought in last year’s BF sale (direct from Melia rather than Amazon), booked for Rome in September this year, cancelled that and booked for New York next July. Should that also get cancelled I’m not sure what happens to the points. Is it that the year expiry resets from when the points go back into your account after a cancellation?

    • Matt B says:

The expiry date will be whether when you last had any activity, and a cancelled booking does not count. As i posted earlier I was in a similar position when my Easter trip was cancelled and I had a few weeks left to use them so purchased 1k for 5 euro and all my points have an expiry of May 2021.

For what its worth i have a pot consisting of points bought from amazon in 2018 and some direct from Melia and all are still valid.

If you were to cancel next years booking closer to the date i guess there may be a risk you lose them, as they will revert to the purchase date plus 1 year which i assume would be around now? Maybe buy a few points from Melia as a backup?

      • Andrew says:

From what I can see from my account I’ve just checked is that the few thousand residual points I have left after making the booking in for next July show as expiring July 2022 – so it seems that making a booking resets the expiration clock to a year after the scheduled stay. So I guess I just need to keep bouncing this stay until I actually want/am able to go to NY. Or just cash in and have a couple of decadent nights at ME London.

      • tom1 says:

Matt – when you bought points, could you check to see who it was billed by please?
Just wondering if it shows as Melia, whether it would trigger the Amex offer (£75 off £300).
(it’s a double-IF – whether they reduce the points on Melia.com to the same price as Amazon, and IF that triggers the amex spend)

        • tom1 says:

scrap that – I’ve just bought some points as a test, will see what shows on Amex app.

        • MattB says:

It’s just says Meliá rewards, however not sure if it will works with amex offers as currency would be in Euros?

          • tom1 says:

I think it just counts as the GBP amount that Amex charge to your statement. Will find out!

      • MKB says:

On the 8 October, Meliá sent me an email which stated:

        – All MeliáRewards Silver, Gold and Platinum members will stay in the same programme tier until December 31, 2021, regardless of the number of bookings, nights and points earned. No members will be downgraded during this period.
        – We are extending the expiry of points again for all MeliáRewards members. Points will not expire until March 31, 2021. And remember that your points do not expire if there is movement in your account every 12 months.
        – We are extending the validity of your pre-selected birthday gift until December 31, 2020

Last time I checked though, my points were still shown as expiring on 30 November 2020. I just tried to check again, and the site won’t let me on, even after a password reset, so I assume it’s down for overnight maintenance.

        • MKB says:

Oddly, the mobile version of the website on my phone is still working. That still shows an expiry date of 30/11/20 which is worrying.

        • Kim says:

I’m in this situation too and Meliá have not replied to my query. I’m reluctant to trust the email without it showing on my account so I may heed others advice and purchase 1000 points to keep them active.

  • Sam says:

Would definitely have snapped up the 55000, weighing up the 35000. Have a 4 night Melia stay next week that may well need extending. This could be the cheapest way, and could always take a trip to Madrid next year if not.
