Amex Platinum adds a £100 Harrods credit – no minimum spend required

Some American Express Platinum cardholders woke up yesterday to a letter from the company giving them a £100 Harrods credit.

The deal runs from 2nd November to 30th November.

It’s not clear how widespread this offer is. (I am not at home at the moment to check if I received anything.)

Harrods American Express

According to a conversation that a reader had with the American Express call centre, the offer will be rolled out to all Platinum cardholders by 2nd November irrespective of whether they received the letter. Note that it does NOT currently show online.

This is not a 100% cast iron guarantee, but let’s see. Obviously anyone who opted out of receiving offers by post from Amex won’t be receiving the letter.

The deal is as good as it can get. It isn’t even a ‘spend £100, get £100 credit’ offer. It is refund of anything you spend, up to £100.

This means that you don’t need to scrabble around trying to get your purchase up to £100 if you find something on the website for £99.99! It also means that you won’t have any trouble buying items in store across different departments, paying at different tills.

For those who have the wrong idea about Harrods, it is NOT dedicated exclusively to luxury items. The book shop (now in the basement) is a standard book shop. The toy department is not especially high end. There is a pharmacist and lots of relatively standard stuff available. The higher up the building you go, the fewer tourists you see and the more it starts catering for locals.

If you don’t live near Harrods, you can order online. Do NOT order gift cards, however, as these are likely to be processed by a 3rd party supplier and will not trigger the cashback. Gift cards purchased in-store should be OK – it worked for me on their last Harrods in-store offer.

Remember that the offer does not go live until 2nd November so don’t head down there (or onto the website) this week.

  • Lady London says:

Used to love the bookshop, it’s been in various places over the years. IIRC it was actually a Waterstone’s, same as the hand-served cheese counter on the Ground Floor used to be Neal’s Yard.

    • Rob says:

It is now a fraction of its former self, as is the toy department.

Fundamentally, under Qatari ownership, it has drastically reduced the stuff aimed at Londoners in favour of more stuff to serve the tourist, and in particular Middle Eastern, market.

If it were possible to fill all six floors with handbags, they would. It’s only the physical impossibility of filling such a huge space with items aimed at the Arabian market which means there is still other stuff there.

  • Rich says:

Any indication so far as to whether this is main cardholder only or supplementary too?

    • Andrew says:

I would imagine just main, they’re not going to make that mistake again like the first £100 offer in June.

    • Nate1309 says:

      If only.

    • KBuffett says:

I seem to recall the mailing says main cardholder only and no supplements. But I don’t have it with my right now to check.

  • Amar says:

Could this potentially be used at one of the restaurants or the Harrods Tea Rooms?

    • Andrew says:

Yes – anywhere in store. All transactions go through Harrods merchant code, even Louis Vuitton which at Selfridges has its own tills.

  • MT says:

I am guessing this is the Platinum version of the £400 Centuion offer from last month. It never appeared online in the offers section and was main card only.

It came in the format of a letter and worked no issue at all with spend on the main card, credit appeared 4 days later.

  • geORge says:

It seems Harrods sells Apple products, they advertise the iPhone12 Pro on their website. Does anyone know if it is an apple store outlet in Harrods that sells the products that could potentially mean that the payment does not go through Harrods? I haven’t been in that tourist maze for years now
    Thanks!

    • KBiffett says:

It’s run by Apple but the payment goes through Harrods tills. Everything at Harrods goes through Harrods tills.

      • Lady London says:

Basically for many years now many departments in Harrods are run as “shop in shops”.

The brand selling there, which would typically apply to a fashion brand, would pay a chunky flat rate rent to be in the store which would in itself eat up a lot of profit.

Additionally the figures I saw many years ago started at something like 30% of turnover payable in addition to Harrods. There’s a constant price pressure upwards to retain the most lucrative positioning within the store and floor and as understand it Harrods were ruthless in moving the floor positioning of a brand if the brand didnt want to pay more or did not meet what Harrods wanted to earn from that space.

As I understand it being at Harrods was more about visibility than profit for a lot of brands.

This is secondary info I saw elsewhere and I am sure retail experts amongst the HfP readership will be a lot more up to date on how that works now.

    • David says:

I’ve bought Apple goods before in Harrods to take advantage of previous offers.

They are sold by Harrods, no problems.

      • Andrew says:

The Apple “shop” at Harrods is like John Lewis – it’s not a concession, the stock is owned and sold by Harrods.

        • David says:

Indeed – not sure why that was posted as a reply to me, rather than Lady London to whom I think your point was directed.
Can confirm, as you say, this is not concession.
And, as I said, the goods are sold by Harrods.

          • Lady London says:

As @KBuffet said, it doesnt matter if shop in shop, concession or whatever. It all goes through Harrods tills with very, very few exceptions (I think dry cleaning/Lilliman & Cox used to be one and LV might be one) so the offer applies to whatever purchased independent of which variant of commercial arrangement the purchase is subject to within the store.

  • Jim says:

Is the platinum busienss card included in this offer?

  • Rob says:

I’ve got this – I suppose if I need to receit anyone before the end of January I can put it on there for nothing!

    • Fred says:

its a strange one Rob, a business account is £200 p/m and can be paid annually.

      • Rob says:

I suppose the key would be to find another sign-up offer somewhere (eg ‘place your first ad and get a free case of wine’) and then combine them.

  • KBuffett says:

    Yes, it’s poor

    • Sam says:

Not too bad I would say, I wouldn’t go out of my way to go there specifically (although I did when it first opened) but managed to get some jeans on sale for just under 100 that retail at 250+ non sale. All sale items from the main store are sent to the outlet so there are some bargains to be had (You can’t earn reward points from purchases in outlet or redeem them but can use gift cards there)
