Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

The slightly odd, very stylish and pretty cheap Atrium Hotel opens at Heathrow airport

If you have driven to Heathrow via Hatton Cross recently, you may have noticed an odd cylindrical building taking shape directly opposite Hatton Cross tube station.

This is the Atrium Hotel – and it has just opened.

This seems to be an odd hotel:

it is huge, at 612 rooms

it has decided not to align with a major international brand.  To me, this seems like commercial suicide in the airport market where a large proportion of guests will be from outside the UK and are looking for the comfort of a big brand.

it is owned by a small company called Regency Homes, not one of the big operators such as Interstate or Arora who have a lot of experience at Heathrow

That said, from a look at the Atrium Hotel website there is a lot to like:

it has a very modern design-led interior

there are a lot of room combinations, including rooms with three beds – this is a great place for families or small groups

it has a pool

some rooms have runway views (although the building is low so take that with a pinch of salt)

the location, literally seconds from Hatton Cross tube station, makes it convenient for all four terminals (it is probably 90 seconds walk nearer the tube than the Hilton Garden Inn)

it is very cheap at present – I saw rooms from £55 for a random Friday night in September

We hope to check it out soon and do a full report.

The website is here.  However, as it is not part of any loyalty scheme, I would book it via Hotels.com instead – this is the specific booking page for the hotel – if the price is the same and earn a credit in Hotels.com Rewards.

Note that, when we booked our room to do a future review, it was £11 cheaper to logged-on Hotels.com users than it was on the Atrium’s own website.  You don’t see the cheaper rate if you are not logged in.

    Wow, is this only just opening? I had a night booked in February or March I think, which got cancelled. (Sensibly I’d also booked the Premier Inn T4 on a refundable rate of £36, which turned out to be fantastic value.)

    I drive past this regularly. This hotel is on the former Gate Gourmet airline kitchen site. At one point it was going to be a Big Yellow self storage site. As another poster says it is ight under the flight path, so I hope the sound-proofing is good. It is also in an island surrounded by roads and the A30 is within 2 metres of the building, interesting that it has a swimming pool but really odd location. Very odd garish colour scheme too which I think will age quickly. I always thought the HGI (former Jury’s Inn) was badly placed but this one takes the biscuit. Really don’t see the point of staying here but good luck to them, they obviously think they can make it pay its way.

      Was wondering what was there before. Another comment implied that there was not a street crossing there, which is crazy if true (although I suppose the council may now do one).

        Just had a look on Google Maps. There are crossings at the lights on the corner, but it’s definitely a junction which prioritises traffic flow over pedestrians, and it’s not a straight line from the Tube at all. Cars, pollution and noise means it’s just not a particularly pleasant corner of Heathrow, but then it’s targeting a corner of the market which takes the Tube or the bus from Feltham rather than the HeX. I wonder if they might become a go-to hotel for airlines offering accommodation because of delays etc.

        The odd thing is that the company seems to otherwise operate unbranded high end country house hotels in the home counties.

        There’s definitely pedestrian crossings, but the wait until lights change is on the longer side. Its definitely very dangerous if you try to jaywalk over though

        Can’t say I’ve ever noticed on my walks to the HGI. Always thought there was a pedestrian crossing.

    On upside of it not being aligned to a brand is that it won’t be full of intolerable Americans wearing chinos thinking they’re the best because they have a frequent hotel flyer card.
