  Does the insurance cover a GP visit when abroad ?
  I estimate cost would be around 70 euros.

  Is there any excess on this policy?

    Yes. Immediate necessary treatment or emergency treatment only. Also covers prescription/pharmacy fees. Excess £50.
    May need a GP letter to prove you didn’t have the ailment in the last 2 years (which can cost £30 to get, basically adding to the excess).

    It does BUT in theory you need to ring Amex and use a GP on their list. In my experience this is not enforced.

  Report in the Observer today of Expedia still charging ‘airline card fees’ £17-21 on bookings. Obvs illegal under EU law. Sure, they refund it on appeal – to the 5% of people who know it’s illegal & can be bothered to chase – but why is Expedia still doing this without sanction?

    It will probably only stop if Trading Standards can find the time to start a prosecution.

    The only time I have used Expedia was before the card fee ban came in – but careful reading of small print made it clear that the card payment would be processed by the airline, which, of course, got me double points too on PRG Amex.

    This is where we need punitive fines not case by case endorsement. So long as the firms doing this only have to refund or get their wrist smacked lightly when they are caught, of course they will make more profit doing it.

  Thanks for this info. I’ve been looking closely at Orbis for a while as I have £15k left of my allowance this year to use. Thinking about maybe investing £10k. Would HfP readers say Orbis is the right route as a S&S first-timer?

    There’s no ‘right route’ and nobody here is qualified to give you advice, well that’s not true, there are plenty here qualified but you have not engaged them as your IFA 🙂

    All depends on you, your age, your investing outlook and investment timeframe.

    But yes – for a (say) 5+ year investment, I’d say either of the 2 Orbis funds are pretty good – pull up their performance on the link I gave above.

    And very fair on the fee structure, where you only pay for out-performance – not many funds can say that.

  Apologies OT: as part of our BA household account my 10 yo brother collected a fair chunk of Avios a while back. How can we stop them expiring as I understand if you do not earn one point per account in 3 years all Avios are wiped from that account.

      Shoestring you saved my bacon when my miserable pot of about 21k virgin was about to expire and their customer service were not telling how I could extend the miles. By then Virgin had locked me out of the account and customer service did not know why. It’s always locking out just like BA On Business used to do forcing a password reset at each login.

      This time it stayed locked out no matter what. So I couldn’t follow your first suggestion same as above, to go into shopping portal and buy something.

      So I followed your second suggestion Shoestring of whacking some Tesco over there and that did the trick. I can also get into my account now. So tax Shoestring you saved my bacon.

      Working on how to gross them up for a one at from the West Coast now.

  O/T, but I thought interesting (if a bit long) Hertz customer service story. Currently in Petrolina, Brazil and I booked 27 day car hire through Hertz to pick up yesterday at 1pm. In the period between booking and arriving, Avianca cancelled my flight (as with many other flights), which means Petrolina airport has now has no flights arriving during the day at all (I had to take a horrendously expensive flight from recife that arrived at 115am instead). Anyway, this prompted the local Hertz office (localiza Hertz) to change their opening hours – except no one told me this. I arrive back at the airport at 1pm to pick up the car and it is like a ghost town, and all phone numbers I try either don’t work, or don’t speak English. They seem to be next open at midnight Sunday. Eventually, and somewhat bizarrely, I manage to start WhatsApping a localiza Hertz customer assistant, who over the course of the next 5 hours starts working to find a solution (I am back at the hotel by this point so not too inconvenient). He decides the best solution is to send me a car from the nearest open office, which is 350km away! The car eventually arrives at 215am at the hotel. The crazy thing is its not even the car I booked (I need an SUV for driving in Serra da Capivara) so they are promising to switch the cars on Monday which would be another 4 hour delivery drive. Can’t decide if I am more impressed at the efforts the local company has gone to to right a wrong, or frustrated at the inconvenience of it all! Will probably send a complaint to Hertz head office (anyone know how i should go about doing so?) whilst also trying to commend the Brazilian customer service assistant.

  Ot – so points and money bookings with Hilton count towards qualifying stays and would they count towards diamond status match. Plus if I do it now I reckon I will get 2k points even if I spend 5k points + cash on a booking.is my understanding correct?

    Reward stays all on points count for the status match, so I can’t see why points + money wouldn’t.

    I’m not sure about the 2k promotion though; I think you should read the terms and conditions.
