BIG NEWS: American Express blocks multiple sign-up bonuses, starting immediately

American Express unveiled massive changes to its UK card sign-up bonuses last night.

This will effectively end card churning for most people.

Before I go on, I want to stress one thing.  The new rules on bonuses do NOT stop you applying for any of these cards.  They simply influence whether or not you will qualify for a sign-up bonus when you do.

It is also worth remembering that, even if YOU no longer qualify for a particular bonus, your partner or other adult family members might.

What is changing?

Until today, American Express sign-up bonuses followed two basic rules:

Cards were grouped into families based on reward type (Membership Rewards points, Avios, Starwood points, Nectar points) and your eligibility for a bonus depended on whether you had recently had a card in the same ‘family’

There was a six month restriction in place between cancelling an American Express card and being able to re-apply – with a new bonus – for a card in the same ‘family’

This is what is changing for the personal American Express cards:

The concept of ‘families’ has gone for most products.  The eligibility rules now span ALL personal American Express cards in most cases.

The look-back period increases from six months to 24 months

Whilst there are two exceptions, in simple terms you cannot get a sign-up bonus on a personal American Express card if you have held ANY personal American Express card in the last 24 months.

Are there any exceptions to these new rules?

Yes.  There are a few exceptions to the above:

The British Airways American Express Premium Plus Card is only impacted by the change in the look-back period to 24 months.   The old rules on eligibility remain – you cannot have had either of the two British Airways American Express cards in the previous 24 months BUT American Express does not count any other card you may have had.

(In plain English: if you’ve had a Platinum / Gold / Starwood / Nectar / Platinum Cashback card in the last two years, but NOT either of the BA Amex cards, you are eligible for the bonus on the Premium Plus card – but not the free BA Amex)

The Platinum Card is only impacted by the change in the look-back period to 24 months.   The old rules on eligibility remain – you cannot have had a Preferred Rewards Gold, Green, Platinum or American Express Rewards card (all of which earn Membership Rewards points) in the previous 24 months BUT American Express does not count any other card you may have had.

(In plain English: if you’ve had a BA / Starwood / Nectar / Platinum Cashback card in the last two years but NOT a card offering Membership Rewards points, you are eligible for the bonus on the The Platinum Card – but not Preferred Rewards Gold)

Small Business and Corporate products are not impacted at all.  The existing rules apply for those.  Importantly, the six month rule continues to apply for these cards.

(In plain English: if you’ve not had any personal or business card offering Membership Rewards points in the past six months, you are eligible for the bonus on the American Express Gold Business and American Express Platinum Business, assuming you own a qualifying small business)

  • Paul says:

Bad news for churners – good news for those who earn points by volume of spend as, I guess, will be less Avios floating around and therefore competition for redemptions

  • Alex Sm says:

I know the Schadenfreude is not a good feeling but this news brought some relief as I have always felt anxious and left-out about these bonuses out of fear to be rejected due to credit history and some balance still to be cleared on my existing cards. Now this anxiety point has been removed. Phew…

    • Shoestring says:

Well if it makes you feel any better I get the old guilty Schadenfreude with bad Curve news as whilst I appreciate the flexibility it can offer (no probs with that) – I *don’t* believe in making it easy for people to harm themselves by paying off credit with more credit, that goes against my moral compass 🙂

[All right if you’re savvy enough to handle it, not everybody is so savvy.]

  • Bob M says:

Ah well, Club Europe for 241 redemptions it is then…

  • Munch says:

Cancelled a Plat card Nov 18 and currently have an SPG card only. Is it correct to say I can apply for a Plat Nov 2020 and receive the bonus?

    • Shoestring says:

Yes, plus the BAPP at the same time (just after) if you want

[Under the new rules, if you had not previously had a personal American Express card, you can get virtually back-to-back:
30,000 Marriott Bonvoy points from the Starwood American Express or 20,000 Nectar points
      plus
30,000 Membership Rewards points from The Platinum Card
      plus
25,000 Avios from the British Airways Premium Plus card]

      • Shoestring says:

Taken me all day to get to my new strategy, which I guess Raffles got to yesterday, as embargoed 🙂

SPG —>then Plat —> then BAPP. Bang. Done. Wait 2 years. Repeat. Time it to get some Priority Pass lounge entries.

        Combine it with some referrals.

Also, one 20K upgrade to Plat still being offered to me on my existing Gold.

        • BJ says:

SPG and/or BAPP may no longer be available in 2 years!

        • Shoestring says:

true but you have to work with the information available, not speculate too much.

BA will replace Amex with another card (visa/ MC) so therein lies a new opportunity

          Bonvoy no doubt similar

the game continues, me lads! (and lasses) 🙂

and who would have thought we could all get 180,000 cheap points out of Iberia last year, eh BJ? 🙂

        • BJ says:

I think I’m going to take a chance and hold my three existing cards for a while and see if they bring along incentives in another form. Not ideal though as tbey are all cobranded with fees (BAPP, SPG and nectar) so I might add PRG or platinum cb despite todays news. My partner can hedge on a different stategy.

        • Thomas Howard says:

Over the next 4-6 months I’m going to have to think about the best strategy for me, I’m on the Gold charge so will hopefully bag 20k MR for an upgrade, then try and self refer SPG, Nectar etc and then either the the free Amex Reward. Or transfer my ISA to HSBC, apply for the World Elite and see what Amex are up to in 2021.

      • Munch says:

I did have a BA card until Jan 2019 so I assume I would need to wait until Jan 2021? Currently using an SPG so wouldn’t that be 24 months after the cancellation date?

  • Mr Simon Shering says:

I have been thinking about this all day, and I don’t think it will affect my churning. OK so I won’t get bonus points on sign up, but the referral bonus is better than nothing and is still free points if I was keeping the card anyway. I will probably carry on referring my wife and vice versa to bag the referral points.

  • krys_k says:

Just thought of this odd one (and sorry if has been covered in one of the previous 100s of posts, but too many to keep on top of) – what if someone took out a card in maiden name, got married and then took out card in married name? Not trying to find loopholes just intrigued

    • Freddy says:

I’m assuming in the application, one of the questions would be previous names and a credit search would match up the old and new name so a no go I’d say

      • Shoestring says:

can’t remember Amex asking for previous or maiden names in the application process

    • Shoestring says:

obvs it depends if the credit check reveals that person is the same person – that’s what Experian etc is there for! 🙂

  • RussellH says:

I would think that cutting sign-up bonuses will make the American Express® Rewards Credit Cards much more attractive. No fees and (almost) the same earning rate as Gold and Platinum, so why would one go for one of the expensive fee charging cards? I can see Amex losing out badly on fee income.

I suspect that I will (try and) get one of these when my PRG Amex is about to run out, and keep it and my BA Amex long term.

    • Thyme says:

It would be interesting to know Amex’s strategy. Doing this and not increasing sign up bonuses gives the impression they aren’t much bothered with the UK market – perhaps Brexit is what did it – or the interchange fee cap? Who knows… hopefully Rob will be able to give a us a little more insight as time goes on. But whatever the reason Amex will no doubt lose a lot of customers and with fewer people holding the card convincing shops to take it may be that much more difficult.

      • Lady London says:

Yes this could be a worrying first sign that there could be real estate available in Brighton soon.

    • BJ says:

      Cannot refer them unfortunately.

  • Robert says:

I’m a burner not a churner so it’s good news for me, and for what seems the minority of people on here who earn there points the old fashioned way, But, I’ve only ever had the BAPP which gives me great points on BA bookings along with plenty of long range 241s, So can I apply for the Amex Plat and receive the sign up bonus of 30,000 pts? I do have the Lloyds Avios Amex which saves me a good bit on FX rates but it’ll expire in 45 days, from what I gather that won’t effect the Plat sign up.
My advice to the churners is get the Avios app, you can get 2 Avios per pound at John Lewis or even 15 per £ in Gucci if that’s your thing. And don’t forget the BA lux sale has a few more days to go. You can get some decent but obscure destinations in F which will net you the thick end of 20k Avios and 500 TP when factoring in a regional. Thanks for all the advice on here guys.

    • Florian says:

You will get a bonus of 35 000 points instead of 30 000 points if you are referred. See my previous comment a few pages earlier.

      • Nero says:

@Shoestring That is something I cannot understand why Amex didn’t shutdown years ago. If for no other reason it cheapens the brand.

    • Thyme says:

This will no doubt lose Amex a lot of customers. I hope you “burners” enjoy even fewer shops accepting your card!
