British Airways selling long haul Economy seats at £100 each way for its 100th birthday

If you were wondering why Virgin Atlantic brought back its £1 ‘Golden Tickets’ game on Monday (see this article), it seems to be a spoiler for a new British Airways offer.

As part of its 100th birthday celebrations, British Airways will be selling 100 long-haul Economy seats each day for £200 return, ie £100 each way.

Different routes will be offered each day between Monday and Thursday at noon.

There will be two different destinations each day, to include the USA, Africa and South America over the course of the week.

Tickets will be made available at noon exactly.  ba.com will collapse at around 12.00:05 ….

Destinations will be listed on this special page of ba.com.

On Monday the destinations were New York and Cape Town.  On Tuesday it was Abu Dhabi and Boston.  On Wednesday it was Pittsburgh and Rio.

Travel dates have varied by destination so it is impossible to predict what will be offered on Thursday.  The window is generally about four weeks.

These tickets have booked into ‘M’ class in general but this is not guaranteed.  This means that you can upgrade them later to World Traveller Plus if Avios reward seats open up.  Do note, however, that this will trigger the higher rate of Air Passenger Duty plus additional BA surcharges so it won’t be cheap.

As an Avios earning opportunity, this is surprisingly good.  A BA Blue member would earn 6,020 Avios and 80 tier points return from the Cape Town offer.  A BA Gold would have earned a whopping 18,060 Avios return plus 80 tier points for their £200 outlay – and they got to visit Cape Town.  Although 2 x 12-hour overnight flights in Economy is not exactly an easy way of earning cheap Avios ….

The promo page for BA’s 100th birthday sale offer is here.

I managed to select the discounted fares for Boston in Feb half term for 2 adults 2 children under 12, the APD for the adults was £78 return (£175 total in taxes), and £0 (£97 total taxes) for the children so the total would have been £644 for the 4 of us if I had completed the booking, but I’ve decided to wait and see what comes up tomorrow. Does that mean BA only pocket £25 for each passenger return for these fares?

  • Choons says:

I found I could not even load the site, after it eventually loaded I tried to look on the cheapest dates finder for a date for Bos but it just came up with 280 in Feb and March, so gave it a miss. Roll on tomorrow!

  • Lewis King says:

Okay Abu Dhabi booked for some nice winter sun. Anyone got any hotel recommendations? They all look incredible…..

    • bsuije says:

Avoid Sofitel Corniche! They couldn’t arrange for a smoke-free room until the final night on a recent trip and staff / management couldn’t have cared less.

You can try staying in Yas Island and chill there, Yas rotana, crowne plaza and so on.

    • Graeme says:

Traders Qarat Al Beri. Excellent 4 star hotel with its own beach and pool. Go for Traders Club Rooms. Probably pay no more than £100 a night. Nice walk along to the Souk at the Shangri-La with shopping and restaurants. Fairmont at the other end of the promenade with excellent buffets in CuiScene.

      • Rob says:

Don’t stay at the IC (reviewed on here). Jumeirah Emirates Towers is good for a city hotel with private beach. For a longer stay go to Saadiyat Island.

      • Rebecca says:

I also recommend the Traders Qarat Al Beri. Stayed there twice with access to the Traders Club Lounge.
Theres a buffet breakfast for everyone where you can sit inside or outside downstairs. But if you can access the Traders Club lounge you can eat in there instead (upstairs) where its a lot quieter. Also you get free soft drinks, teas and coffees all day in there plus a happy two hours (I think 5-7pm) where they do food (canapes) and alcohol for free. The food isn’t bad!
Its nice and quiet in the rooms too. Has a private beach but I think they all do really.

    • New Card says:

St Regis Saadiyat is very nice

  • Lewis King says:

I would be willing to bet Rio is an option tomorrow.

  • Carlo says:

Booked Abu Dhabi great find thank you HFP!!!!

  • Martin Pelant says:

was deciding on the date too long: “The flight selected has sold out whilst you have been completing the transaction.” (sold out in about 15 minutes).
Well Abu Dhabi wouldn’t be my first choice anyways. Let’s wait what are they gonna offer tomorrow.

  • Mikeact says:

I managed to get on the Boston page, and got all the way through to payment, but my wife chimed in “£200 each, for a longish weekend ?” “No way” !

  • Michael Gareth Cheshire says:

I’m planning a trip to Rio anyway this summer so I do hope that’s up today. My question is to those who managed to get the payment page (or completed a booking) any hints or tips so I might do the same at 12.01??? Thanks in advance peeps.

    • Michael Gareth Cheshire says:

Oh…. and could I just book a return journey?? (as I’d like to use my LLoyds upgrade voucher LON-GIG). Thanks Again x

      • Alex W says:

The BA page says £100 each way as part of a return trip, implies no one-way allowed.

You wouldn’t be able to use the upgrade voucher to upgrade a cash fare. If aiming for a PE redemption you would probably be better off anyway buying the cash return and upgrade using Avios.

You could throwaway the return leg and book a club world redemption using the upgrade voucher. The taxes would be lower redeeming for the return leg too. However, short notice award availability to Rio could be scarce.
