  • W says:

Perhaps some of the experienced fliers have an idea: I have a one way 241 booking for two people from Lon to sfo in late December 2018. Can I modify my booking to add a return flight at – 355 for dec 2019? The 35quid fee is ok.

And could the return go to Europe via London, or do I have to end in lhr? Thanks!

    • Rob says:

The return has to be less than a year after the outbound (or 355 days?) but apart from that it isn’t a problem.

Not sure about ending in Europe. It must originate in the UK, not sure about return?

      • W says:

Great, thanks! I’ll have a go in a couple months and report back.

      • Dougie Forde says:

I booked the second leg of a 2 for 1 in May. The return flight is showing on my account but the points haven’t been deducted. Is this normal? If so, when will the points be deducted?

    • pauldb says:

You will have to return to the UK – them the rules. And as Rob says the return will have to be within a year of the outbound. Practically speaking you’ll have to add the return at least the day before you outbound. So if your outbound is 12th December then on the 11th you can book your inbound for 1st December 2019. (You shouldn’t have to pay £35 for this). If you want to stretch it even further then after flying out you can still shift the date again (for £35). Your ticket will be valid for 1yr from issue, so your limit is 11th December 2019.

    • Lady London says:

I believe the return has to be within about 11 and a half months or so, from the ticket issue date? So if you bought and had the ticket issued far in advance of the outbound I’m guessing your window for the return might be shorter?

If I’m, wrong someone please correct me. I think I came unstuck on this with a BMI award ticket in the past and was told this. However BMI wasn;t known for uniform application of all the rules apparently 🙂

      • pauldb says:

Not so, because the ticket is reissued on the date you add the return. Otherwise anyone booking a two week trip in two halves at T-355 would be caught out, as the inbound would be 369 days after the first leg was booked.

OT: Is anyone else having trouble with combine my Avios from Iberia? BA and Avios giving an error and the transfer page on Iberia is blank?

    • Relaxo says:

Just moved avios yesterday. Worked fine. You need to use the combine my avios feature by signing into BA exec club. Then choose the direction of transfer. The Iberia page showed up blank for me as well.

      • Craig says:

Thanks. When I put my Iberia details in the BA or Avios site they don’t work. I can logon to the Iberia website with the same details without problem.

    • Anton L. says:

      Encountering similar issues

      • Jason says:

Mine are still only showing one way from ba to Iberia…is this a 90 day problem? Although the miles from the promotional offer have been in the account for 4 months

        • Rob says:

No it is the usual IT mess. You need to route via an Avios.com account.

        • Craig says:

Even that’s not working for me Rob, it has done in the past.

        • C says:

I finally managed to transfer 500 across at about 8am this morning that I got with the IHG promotion. After failing through the Iberia website a couple of weeks ago I sent in a copy of my passport with a data rectification form (as had somehow given myself 2 surnames when I registered) to make sure everything matched as I thought this might be the issue. The IB page was blank when I came back to try again so ended up logging into avios and doing IB–> avios–> BA. Worked fine then!

  • Ed says:

O/t – has anyone booked UK car hire using the US Priceline site – it’s much cheaper, just worried the car hire firm might question it? Has anyone done this? Looking for a week long UK car hire for December, any tips at getting cheaper hire would be welcomed.

    • AG says:

I did, albeit for a rental in Belgium not the UK. Worked a treat except that CDW wasn’t included but I was ok with that as I have my own insurance.

    • Chan says:

Do it all the time, well use it through autoslash

    • Bonglim says:

I think they are correct – the main difference is the insurance – make sure you have some other insurance or are happy to pay the full amount suggested.
That is why it is cheaper.

  • FlyUpTop says:

Funnily enough Hilton dropped ME a line also about the downtime. Lol…????

  • David says:

OT bits: has anyone else had an email from Marriott about Hostmaker, inviting you to an information evening in South Kensington? Apparently I’ll get 10k Marriott points just for turning up, as well as free drinks and canapés…

    • Rob says:

I got it and it was sold out when I tried to book on (which would have been 4am UK time).

They have messed this up. They want you to come to a £10m house in South Ken for a party to discuss, in passing, letting out your home via Hostmaker who are paying for it. The bribe is so big, however, that people will go along just for the 10k points and Ottolenghi food even if they don’t even own their own home in order to let it out.

I would have not offered the 10k for turning up and instead offered 100k if you choose to list with Hostmaker. At the very least, I would be pre-approving applications by checking people who want to come do actually own their property.

It’s amusing that the other Marriott article today discusses another promo where Marriott’s marketing team has not exactly covered itself in glory.

      • David says:

Mm, interesting. I do own my flat at least, so could actually be relevant for me!

  • Alan says:

Is it really a bonus on Virgin FC to Tesco Clubcard or is it rather the other way around?

  • Nick_C says:

Is TCC to VFC to Hilton the cheapest way of buying Hilton Honors points? 0.24p a point of my maths is correct. 10000 FC miles convert to 15000 HH.

    • Rob says:

It is … but if you’re only getting 0.33p (which is where most Hilton redemptions end up) then you’re getting 1.4 x face value on your Clubcard vouchers. That is far worse than pretty much every other redemption including using the Tesco vouchers for hotels.com. As a top-up of an existing Hilton balance it might make sense.

    • Genghis says:

Or 0.72p if you’d otherwise convert to Uber. I’d be happy to buy your Tesco points off you for 1p ea

      • Nick_C says:

I use the Doubletree at Sheffield Park to visit family in the area. So £48.50 a night, buying points this way, would be good value for me. Also makes use of orphaned virgin miles

Uber? Not round here! Never been in one.

      • Nick_C says:

I wouldn’t sell Club Card points. I would usually convert them to Avios. But in working out how much I pay for Avios or Hilton Points I value CCP at a penny as that is what I would get for them in Tesco. So I cost my Avios from Tesco at 0.44p, even though most of my CCPs are genuinely free.

        • Genghis says:

OK – fair enough. If you pay cash for hotels.com (or arguably another booking engine) you’re buying your avios for around 1p.

        • Genghis says:

Not too sure how you come to your conclusion. I calculate it as £783.14 for 72,500 avios, meaning 1.08ppa.

        • Doug M says:

Banking on Avios through the BA shopping portal is a risk.

  • Sussex Bantam says:

OT – the policy on automatic Accor transfers seems to have changed. Yesterday I enabled transfers to Iberia to take advantage of the new offer. I had 1105 points in my account which normally would not have been swept across as less than 2000. This morning they have all been transferred to Iberia leaving me with a zero balance. Not the end of the world but mildly irritating…

    • Rob says:

No, that was always how it worked – except, sometimes, it wouldn’t work as expected. Any balance, however small, got swept across when you turned this feature on. Most people find it useful because they can empty out orphan balances.

      • Sussex Bantam says:

Beg to differ – must have done it 20 times. Amounts less than 2000 stayed in the account – full amount swept when amount went over 2000.

        Not relevant now anyway !

    • Alan says:

I missed the news of a new offer. I currently have about 2200 points stuck in Accor with no real likelihood of either using them at a hotel or getting any more. I have managed to keep them live by doing an occasional survey but I would rather not have to bother.

      • Alan says:

        Ah. Just found the offer.

Still no good to me as I can’t transfer less than 3000 miles to Iberia.

        • Obi says:

But SB and Rob(?!) just said above that any amount may still autotransfer so worth a try anyway.

      • Rob says:

Set up the Iberia transfer (see my article the other day) and your current balance will go across.

        • Jill (Kinkell) says:

Great. Set it all up to transfer 1600 Accor points that were going to expire in about 6 weeks.
          Very timely post!

        • Alan says:

Thanks. I’ll give that a go
