Etihad partners with Air Europa, opening up new SkyTeam opportunities

Etihad and Air Europa announced a new frequent flyer partnership yesterday.

Whilst you might not know Air Europa, it is a Spanish-based airline which is part of the huge SkyTeam alliance, flying domestically and to Latin America and the Caribbean.  From the UK, it flies from London Gatwick to Madrid.

This opens up some interesting options.  Here are a few things you can now do as part of the new partnership:

Fly Etihad and credit the miles to Air Europa.  Looking at the relevant page of the Air Europa website, it appears that Etihad flights will earn ‘level’ miles which count for status.   The English translation here is not great and it is possible that only Etihad flights operated as Air Europa codeshares count for status, but that isn’t how I read it.  This means that you can potentially earn SkyTeam status by crediting your Etihad flights to Air Europa and not to Etihad Guest.

Fly Air Europa and credit the miles to Etihad GuestThis page of the Etihad website shows you what you will earn.  This is a sensible option if you don’t collect SkyTeam miles and end up doing the occasional Air Europa flight.  Note that booking classes  X, O, F, G, Z, N and A earn nothing in Etihad Guest.

Redeem Etihad Guest miles on Air Europa.  Given Air Europa’s niche route network this is only likely to make sense in a few scenarios but the option is at least there.

Credit your SkyTeam flights to Air Europa in order to get access to Etihad redemptions.  This is not necessarily a great idea – because it may be easier to earn status with other SkyTeam partners and you can’t top-up Air Europa miles easily as they have few partners – but the option is there.

It isn’t clear if Etihad Guest status card holders get any benefits when flying with Air Europa, or vice versa.

How to earn Etihad Guest miles from UK credit cards

How to earn Etihad Guest miles from UK credit cards (April 2025)

Etihad Guest does not have a UK credit card.  However, you can earn Etihad Guest miles by converting Membership Rewards points earned from selected UK American Express cards.

Cards earning Membership Rewards points include:

Membership Rewards points convert at 1:1 into Etihad Guest miles which is an attractive rate.  The cards above all earn 1 Membership Rewards point per £1 spent on your card, which converts to 1 Etihad Guest mile.

The American Express Preferred Rewards Gold card earns double points (2 per £1) on all flights you charge to it, not just with Etihad but with any airline.

Shame it’s a 787-8 and not a 789 but still good news and I like the flight times! Thanks for sharing

    • Rob says:

On the upside, there is a good chance a 787-8 will be working on the day you fly ….

The BA passengers flying the 787-9 time to Abu Dhabi at the moment who arrive at Heathrow to find an Air Belgium charter plane are probably not so happy they booked a 789.

  • Leo says:

OT: Just checked in on BA app. Boarding pass says no luggage allowance. Is this common? Obviously I had luggage on the way out and was a BA hotel+flight booking.

  • ScienceTeacher says:

Paid both Amex and Barclaycard through Curve from Lloyds yesterday; no cash advance fee yet (and hopefully not on £3k!)

  • Jason wiltshire says:

Paid off Newday credit card with Curve to Tesco as the underlying.

Nice chunky £23 ‘cash advance fee’!

Anyone know what the T&C position is for this, given Tesco backtracking on Curve fees a while back?

    • mr dee says:

can’t you time machine that payment?

      • Jason wiltshire says:

Yes have done, although last time Tesco refused to refund the cash transaction fee. Was later resolved via a complaint – not sure i’ll be so lucky this time!

    • Alan says:

I’d go ‘back in time’ on the transaction to a different card then once Tesco purchase refunded I’d call them to get the fees back.

  • Mark2 says:

    +1
I had forgotten about them, but an excellent picture of four dog.

    • RussellH says:

I too had forgotten all about them. Amusing and pleasant surprise, particularly as I have never flown Etihad, and cannot see me doing so in the future.

  • Boi says:

Does anyone know if Hilton or virgin cc charge for Revolut top ups?

  • ankomonkey says:

Mine came yesterday too. Very pleased with them since they were free 🙂 . Thanks to the person who posted about this.

    • Alan says:

Ditto, can’t remember the OP but a nice wee freebie and less DYKWIA than some airline luggage tags! I can only imagine what sort of submissions some folk made though, must have taken them a while to vet the submitted photos!

My kids were very happy with the pictures of their stuffed animals on theirs……

OT: Currently at a DT (will name and shame if they don’t sort) as Hilton Gold x2 (4 adults staying in 2 rooms). Our rooms are not on the breakfast list, and each day i have to assure the waiting staff that breakfast is free. Today a more officious staff member repeatedly told me it isn’t. At reception, I was told that “it is breakfast or points” (technically true), I have “already chosen points” (I was not offered a choice at Check in, though I imagine my MyWay is set to points), and “this cannot be changed”. Obviously I stood my ground and said we won’t be paying for any of the breakfasts consumed in our stay. They said they will “try and change it with Hilton”.

This has left me in a slightly unpalatable stand off with the hotel and I am sure there will be a further episode when next I pass reception.

Any views on how this should play out? I don’t think they have a leg to stand on, as free breakfast is an advertised Gold benefit and they never asked me to make a choice to have it or not have it?

    • Alan says:

Hotels can change it on their system and points don’t post until after checkout so I don’t think they’ve got a leg to stand on – they just need to know how to use the system and update your preference before checkout!

    • Alex W says:

If your my way is set to points and you didn’t ask for free breakfast at check in, could be a tough argument to win…

    • S**mo says:

I’ve never had to say that i would like breakfast as a Gold?

      • Alex W says:

That may be the case but if you’re banking on certain benefits I would recommend getting them confirmed at check-in. For example if I was expecting lounge access I don’t wait to find out my key card doesn’t get me in. I make sure the check-in person programs the key for lounge access while I wait. Same with breakfast, make sure you’re getting what you’re entitled to when you check in.

    • john says:

I stayed at Hilton Garden Inn in Phoenix as Gold in March and can’t remember what was discussed at check-in with regards breakfast, but at check-out they had added x number of breakfasts which we had consumed to the bill. I advised it should be free as Gold member. They removed them from the bill. My account was originally set to free breakfast but at some point got changed to points (I don’t believe I changed it to that at all). My booking confirmation had it down as breakfast.

Could always call Hilton if they continue to refuse?

      • Rob says:

Free breakfast is not an advertised Gold benefit or, if it is, it will come with a little star next to it with small print “if you select it in your MyWay benefits”.

People like me may call it ‘free breakfast’ but that isn’t actually the case. For eg, my wife was in Amsterdam last week and her PA booked a B&B rate, so I immediately went off and changed her MyWay benefit to the extra 1000 points.

This is quite cunning for Hilton. What they want is for business travellers to take the extra 1000 MyWay points and pay for breakfast instead, knowing that the company picks up the bill and the traveller double dips on extra points (since they get points on the breakfast spending too!).

          Things you’ll do for £3 of points…

        • Pangolin says:

One advantage of Diamond over Gold is not being forced to make the choice between points and breakfast in certain brands.

    • BJ says:

Sounds like DT Newcastle Airport to me? If so, I’ll share the rest of our story with you.

      • Crafty says:

No, I’m in Spain. Will let you know how it plays out. I was never asked to make the choice (and never have been in 50+ stays as a Gold). If I’d been asked, I would have said breakfast, as that’s what I want. So I intend to fully stand my ground.

        • BJ says:

Oh, sounded very like my experience at Newcastle Airport but I was Diamond. In the end I got both as I should have. However, like you I think I always got both as gold too. Good luck.

    • Andrew L says:

Just change your preference in the ‘my way benefits’ section from the menu in the Hilton Honors phone app from points to free breakfast for each brand.

      • Crafty says:

Thank you for the comment, but will this help? I’m already halfway through my stay. If the hotel is insisting it cannot change my preference retrospectively, surely I cannot either.

        • Andrew L says:

Change it and show them what you have selected. I’m sure the hotel will honour it.
