Five UK Marriott hotels, mainly country clubs, are to leave the chain

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

Five UK Marriott hotels are leaving the chain in two weeks, despite being included on the new points pricing list from August.

These are:

  • Sunderland Marriott
  • Newcastle Marriott Gosforth Park

  • Hollins Hall Marriott Hotel & Country Club, Shipley
  • Meon Valley Marriott Hotel & Country Club, Southampton
  • Sprowston Manor Marriott Hotel & Country Club, Norwich

The last day that these hotels will operate under the Marriott brand is 18th July.

These hotels were recently for sale – I don’t know if a deal was concluded.  The removal of the Marriott branding is being described as a positive to give the buyer a clean sheet.

i booked my promotional flights on Friday and Saturday using a pre-existing IB+ account … stayed up until 3.30am waiting for Avios to arrive … but they didn’t.

they showed up at 10.30am and amazingly the flight i had my eye on was still available !

  • KingK says:

Mine arrived but only 6/8 bookings so far, 54000 posted.
Unfortunately unable to transfer out to Avios using combine my avios.
Any ideas on how to transfer out?

  • the real harry1 says:

Flying business LHR—> place in the sun is coming out at 12500 + £43.30

With my IB Avios working out @ 0.3p, I make that £80.80, so I guess I can justify it on the basis that lounge = £15, on board drinks & snack = £10, I don’t give any value to the other extras (well, I like a blocked middle, I suppose).

And I use T3 so that means I can try out all the other lounges, right? That must be worth a few bob just for the fun of that.

If it means not losing the points by Dec 1st, I think I could get pretty good value even flying the ‘wasteful’ business seat.

Looks like I’ll (briefly) be joining the DYKWIA-erati 🙂

    • Peter K says:

A blocked middle? Nothing a good dose of Senokot won’t cure! 😉

    • Brian W says:

I tried the Qantas lounge in T3 on Monday Harry, great lounge!

Club Europe comes with 2 x 32kg allowance so there may be a saving her also compared to your normal RFS’s?

      • the real harry1 says:

Can’t fit any more in the car! 4 pieces of checked luggage is plenty (+3 kids) – and on my route they’ll always check in extra cabin bags free of charge if you ask nicely. Probably doing them a favour.

But yes – very much looking forward to using the good lounges, No1/ Club Aspire are fine but I’ve had a severe case of lounge envy for some time 🙂

        • the real harry1 says:

I could almost justify taking my 4×4 truck up to Heathrow for the first time in years – you could easily stack 8x 32kg in the back! We always have a big backlog of things to take out to the place in the sun.

          Almost – but not quite.

It would probably break down & it’s something like £120 there & back vs £45 in the Beemer 🙂

      • Andrew* says:

Did I miss something somewhere in the T3 Qantas lounge… apart from the gin bar downstairs (it was a little early for cocktails for me when I was there) I found the main area of the lounge grey and soulless….

I much preferred the Cathay lounge…

        • Brian W says:

Didn’t make it to the Cathay lounge so can’t compare although I spent nearly 3 hours there and made full use of the gin bar so perhaps that’s influenced my opinion. Either way, staff were great and the facilities very clean. Everything was replenished quickly and the presentation of the food excellent so my experience was very good. It was faily busy at the time so that probably helped the atmosphere.

      • Lady London says:

I personally preferred the CX Lounge by quite some distance.
Other than the wonderful chandelier, I thought the QF one OK but not one I would make a special trip to.
It also has opening hours and food service hours that are more restricted than you might think.

    • Cat says:

Ooh, that’s narrowed down the location of this mysterious place in the sun…

      • the real harry1 says:

        yep keep it quiet 🙂

did you get the referral from Raffles rob [@] headforpoints.com?

        • Cat says:

I didn’t go for it – I managed to transfer 5,500 into Iberia via Avios.com during one of the brief periods it was actually working, so when the flights I want appear, I should be sorted! I don’t want to push my credit rating too much if I don’t need to.

Now, here’s hoping my Economist M&M miles appear in the next 6 weeks or so to get the outbound flight…

  • Andy_h says:

Bits/OT: Mrs_h and I have made a bit of a last minute decision to visit the Channel Islands over the summer, flights into Jersey. Have never been to any of the Islands and was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for hotels and ‘must-visits’ while we’re there. Thanks…..

    • Andrew M says:

I vastly far prefer Guernsey – less trippery + many wonderful beaches + easy access by ferry to the beautiful neighbouring islands of Herm (Google Shell Bay) and Sark (horse drawn carts, bikes + pedestrians, think ‘step back in time’ type of thing, no cars). Google Sark Fire Engine, Sark Ambulance, Sark Prison. Means flying Aurigny from Gatwick though! So no avios redemption possible these days!

      • Andy_h says:

Thanks – coming down from Scotland which realistically means only Jersey in/out as direct flights. Will give us a chance to see Jersey, but we’ll maybe spend more time in/around Guernsey – will certainly investigate the suggestions.

      • Genghis says:

Guernsey is a strange, slightly backward place. I had to spend a week there for work in autumn last year. Staff there seemed to think they had some quality restaurants on the island but they didn’t appreciate my criticism! Old Government House was decent if a bit old fashioned for me.

        • Pangolin says:

Genghis, if you think that about Guernsey you should pay a visit to the Isle of Man!

    • roberto says:

The Raddison in St Hellier is my bolt hole when in JER, great position on the seafront and free parking.

Other things I enjoyed was St Brelade’s Bay ( quite lovely beach ) and the WWII tunnels. Too be honest there is not loads to do and the whole place is very quaint. Get a car and zip around , beaches , cliffs , devils hole and Lighthouses everywhere plus stunning vistas..

Oh and the Ales in The Lamplighter in St Hellier are well worth checking out. Staggering distance from The Raddison.

      • roberto says:

Sorry and the wine tour at La Mare was fun – check out that black butter too

      • the_real_a says:

Just to add that the Raddison has a silly deal with Hertz for a rental car for guests only. Its all inclusive to INCLUDE fuel. Pick up and drop off at the hotel. Package price was substantially below the quoted hertz or priceline rates and which obviously excluded fuel.

        • Yuff says:

Longueville Manor is the place to stay in Jersey
Guernsey doesn’t have an equivalent, OGH is about the best hotel

    • Bagoly says:

I did LGW-JER-LGW for TP run earlier this year.
I asked a client contact who is from Jersey whether I should explore for a few hours or just come straight back.
      She suggested come straight back!

  • Mycity says:

My 90k hit last night, my wife’s who was on the same booking didn’t arrive till this morning. 180k fantastic.

    • Mark says:

Same here. My wife’s has also now arrived. Now to decide what to do with them… hopefully the issues around topping up accounts using CMA will be resolved soon as well!

  • Dave C says:

I’ve received the 72,000 avios I was expecting into my 3 year old account. Nothing in my wife’s account, this was set up the same day she booked her flights (sunday 24/6). Is there a problem with new accounts? Apologies if this has been discussed earlier.

    • Nicholas Shaw says:

Dave – looks like new account have to be verified by Iberia – you need to send them passport details.

      • Pug206 says:

Big thank you to Rob for always banging on to us about having an Iberia account open!!
        x

      • Dave C says:

thanks, I’ll get on to it

  • Michael Jennings says:

OT: I have been hitting all my Accelerate targets for the current IHG promotion. I did a stay on the weekend which hit a number of different targets. I’ve been given all the points for everything but “Book and pay for one stay using your IHG credit card”, and also for the Achievement bonus that would have come from hitting all the targets.

I made the booking using the IHG app (in order to hit another target). The IHG credit card was charged by the hotel in advance of the stay rather than at check-out. Should I complain to IHG now, or wait a bit longer and see if this comes through later than all the other bonuses?

    • KevMc says:

Was the pre-payment made prior to the start of the promotion?

    • Lyn says:

The points from the IHG credit card accelerate target always seems to take the longest in my experience, sometimes several weeks after the stay. Even if it was charged in advance and was non-refundable the accelerate points have always been credited well after the stay. Perhaps something to do the statement closing date, and thus confirmation from the bank that it has actually been charged?

      • Michael Jennings says:

Because the hotel pre-charged me for the room, the credit card statement with the charge on it was actually issued before the hotel stay, rather than after.

Still, though, I will give it a couple of weeks before I chase it up.

    • RussellH says:

My points arrived together with my IHG M/card points. My account was not credited with 1500 on their own, as previously, but I received 1500+x points, where x is the number of points awarded by creation for IHG purchases in the month in question.

    • Doug M says:

Same for me. Someone on here, perhaps Genghis, said wait a bit and then call them. As it happens another stay seemed to trigger it, so it was unnecessary for me to follow up.
