Five UK Marriott hotels, mainly country clubs, are to leave the chain

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

Five UK Marriott hotels are leaving the chain in two weeks, despite being included on the new points pricing list from August.

These are:

  • Sunderland Marriott
  • Newcastle Marriott Gosforth Park

  • Hollins Hall Marriott Hotel & Country Club, Shipley
  • Meon Valley Marriott Hotel & Country Club, Southampton
  • Sprowston Manor Marriott Hotel & Country Club, Norwich

The last day that these hotels will operate under the Marriott brand is 18th July.

These hotels were recently for sale – I don’t know if a deal was concluded.  The removal of the Marriott branding is being described as a positive to give the buyer a clean sheet.

Just got an e-mail from MIles & More stating miles will begin expiring on July 1, 2019. Thankfully, LH seems to have softened their approach given the MBNA card withdrawal. Now let’s hope NewDay or Creation pick up a new card contract.

    • meta says:

      No, not Creation please!

      • Alex T says:

        Better than nothing…

        • Rob says:

Those in the know love Creation 😉

        • Mark2 says:

I agree with Rob: I think Creation are great!

        • Pangolin says:

Sometimes their are specific upsides to dealing with organisations that are functionally incompetent (which is what Rob is hinting at).

      • G00NFACE says:

Seconded not Creation!! I do not like the IHG Creation Credit Card. Painful day-to-day usage and payments = no saving of payment cards to settle balance, no App, must phone to reset PIN and regularly blocked when paying for goods across countries (where there is no issues with Barclaycard or Amex). Then you have to wait for Monday-Friday 9-5pm to unblock your card. If it’s a Saturday evening, tough, your card is unusable until you call up on Monday.

All I use my IHG Creation card for is to hit the £10,000 spend for free IHG night and keep IHG account active.

        • RussellH says:

I do not have any issues with Creation TBH. I would not normally use an FX-charging card outwith the UK (though I did once use a Marriott M/Card for a small bill in the Miami Marriott and the FX Charge was significantly less than expected, and I did get 4 points per £1). I do not use Android or iOS, have always been able to change PIN at a cash machine.

My only concern would be whether they would let me have a third card, as I have both Marriott and IHG white. But my Marriott card is currently my main non Amex card.

    • Roger says:

We all know Rob, what you mean!

  • Geoff says:

OT re Curve / Tesco: I have this morning received a refund from Tesco Bank of the fees they charged when deeming Curve transactions to be ‘cash’.

  • Mikeact says:

Without wishing to preach to the converted, it is imperative to note that all various Avios accounts MUST be identical in respect of personal data, no ifs or buts.

    • RussellH says:

But not identical e-mail addresses. My avios a/cs all have addresses with the same domain, but they all have different left hand sides (ba@…, ib@…, ei@…, e-mail@…).

No problems with moving avios, as long as I suspend Ghostery.

  • Robert says:

Has anyone who needed to manually re-enter their IB+ number on the bookings received their avios?

Mine disappeared when I logged in on Monday and I re-entered… worried it’s fouled up the avios delivery as nothing yet!

  • Frenchy says:

Can anyone confirm they received the 9k Avios for bookings made on Iberia website but not on the promo page ?
My partner is worried because he did most of the bookings without clicking on the promo link, and at the moment he still got nothing.
I remember Raffles indicated that Iberia said that bookings didn’t have to be made through the promo link. Just wanted to check it worked for others?
    Thank you!

    • Rob says:

This is not an issue. What IS an issue is if you were in a country not on the participating list, but if you were were sitting in the UK at the time it will have gone via the UK site. Have you double checked IB numbers are in the bookings?

      • Anon says:

Iberia.com seems to have worked based on choosing UK- English.
I was physically in an EU, but not mentioned, country at the time.

    • Simon says:

I’ve received promotional Avios for flights not booked through the promotional link on the homepage, just general flight searches.

    • Frenchy says:

Thank you Rob, Simon, Panic over and all posted indeed in the end!

  • Lukethetraveller says:

My 90k points arrived this morning (it cost me under 180£ total, TBC will hopefully knock down the price further). I used some of these avios for car hire booking on IB website, booking confirmed on IB website, however no confirmation email has arrived yet (interestingly my car hire cost 50% more avios this week comparing to last week, still great deal). Looking around IB website, avios redeption avail. is about the same as it was last week (MAD-JFK business for 34k avios in September easy to find).

  • Guesswho2000 says:

This might sound stupid, but how do you know if your account is locked? I can login fine, but when I go to my profile, I get prompted to login again, at which point it says I’m not eligible to change the same on reservations (which I’m not trying to do anyway, which makes me think it’s a website issue).

No points posted yet, old IB account with previous activity, bought tickets from both the UK and ES sites while logged in, all reservations showing in my account fine, so I haven’t bothered pestering IB about it yet.

    • Lumma says:

Are you using Chrome? The Iberia website doesn’t like it

      • guesswho2000 says:

No, Safari and Firefox. It’s always been temperamental using both of those.

Anyhow, they’ve just appeared, and I can confirm they won’t transfer out via Avios.com either, but I’m sure I’ll be able to use them where they are somehow!

  • Optimus Prime says:

FYI there’s availability (or at least there was when I booked mine) for MAD-USA redemptions for May’s first bank holiday. And it’s off-peak…

    • Optimus Prime says:

May’s second bank holiday is off-peak too though 27th May 2019 is US Memorial Day and hotel availability might be harder (and more expensive) to find.
