EXCLUSIVE: Big changes coming to your Lloyds Avios Rewards credit card

I would like to claim that this story was the work of our crack team of investigative journalists, but I actually owe it to reader Jack.  He posted it in the comments on Saturday night whilst I was on the way to the Hilton Honors Bastille gig with a note saying ‘erm, Rob, you should look at this’.

We have known for some time that the American Express element of the Lloyds Avios Rewards credit card was living on borrowed time.  Amex has cancelled all of its licensing deals with other banks.  The Lloyds Avios Rewards card was withdrawn from the market for new applicants a couple of months ago.

By mistake, I imagine, the terms and conditions of the new Lloyds Avios-earning credit card have been posted online.  (EDIT: link removed as the document has been removed)

We believe that the new card will be called the Lloyds British Airways Mastercard.

This is what is going to happen:

The American Express element is dead.  The card will be a pure Mastercard.

The upgrade voucher seems dead.  It appears that you will no longer get an upgrade voucher for spending £7,000 per year on the card.

There may be no annual fee – it is not mentioned in the new T&Cs

You may start paying FX fees.  There is no mention in the new T&Cs that they are waived.

Here are the earning rates for the new Lloyds British Airways Mastercard:

0.4 Avios per £1 spent in the UK

0.8 Avios per £1 spent outside the UK

0.4 Avios per £1 on balance transfers (but presumably there is a fee attached to these)

One implication of how the rules are written, although it isn’t fully clear, is that Avios will be earned in multiples of £5.  Your actual earning will be less than 0.4 Avios per £1.  Any purchase under £5 will earn nothing.  All other purchases will be rounded down to the nearest £5.

(The other implication of the wording is that only your total monthly spending is rounded down to the nearest £5, which clearly makes no real difference to what you earn.)

Here is an interesting quirk:

Holders of a Club Lloyds current account will earn an extra 0.1 Avios per £1 (0.2 Avios per £1 for foreign transactions)

This takes you up to 0.5 Avios per £1 for UK spending and 1 Avios per £1 for foreign spending.

For this to kick in, you must have had a Club Lloyds current account for at least six months.

Going forward, with the closure of the Avios Travel Rewards Programme, you will manage your Lloyds credit card account via www.ba.com/lloyds.  This page is not yet live.

When are these changes kicking in?

As the current Lloyds Avios Rewards cards are closed to new applicants, there is no doubt that these changes are for existing cardholders.  I assume that you will receive an email shortly from Lloyds announcing the closing date for the existing cards.

What do I think of the changes?

Frankly, compared to the new Virgin Atlantic credit cards (details here) this will be a very poor product.

The free Virgin Mastercard offers 0.75 Virgin Atlantic miles per £1.  Lloyds is offering you 0.4 Avios instead.

The paid Virgin Atlantic Mastercard offers a whopping 1.5 miles per £1, almost 4x what Lloyds is offering.

The Virgin cards also have the ‘241’ offer, albeit only in Economy unless you have Virgin status.  The new Lloyds Avios Rewards credit cards appear to have nothing.  The assumed loss of the upgrade voucher is particularly poor as this was a real boon, especially for solo travellers.

On the upside, assuming there is no annual fee, it will be more generous than the Tesco Clubcard Mastercard (which, note, currently offers 2400 Avios as a sign-up bonus via 1000 free Clubcard points).  It was a little embarrassing that you earned more Avios on the FREE Tesco Clubcard Mastercard (0.3 Avios per £1) than on the £24 Lloyds Avios Rewards Mastercard (0.25 Avios per £1) …..

Of course, if you qualify for it, the HSBC Premier Mastercard (free to Premier current account holders) pays 0.5 Avios per £1.  The HSBC Premier World Elite Mastercard offers 1 Avios per £1.

It is roughly equal to the free IHG Rewards Club Mastercard which gets you 1 IHG point per £1 which I value at 0.4p.  I also value 0.4 Avios per £1 via Lloyds at 0.4p.  The IHG card does give you Gold status in IHG Rewards Club as an extra perk, however.

For clarity ….

I can’t be 100% certain that the terms outlined above are fully correct.  It is possible, for example, that the upgrade voucher may be retained but just isn’t mentioned in the terms and conditions …. but that would be odd.  Similarly, it is possible that FX transactions will remain free.  We need to wait for Lloyds to make the full announcement.

In case you’re wondering, I have no idea if Lloyds intends to open up the card to new applicants or not.  Based on my recent conversations with Avios, it isn’t happening in the short term.

These T&Cs only seem to cover the “scheme” which refers to the loyalty elements. As you’ve rightly pointed out, there is no mention of the upgrade voucher so we can assume that’s gone. Since these aren’t the actual credit card terms and conditions, I wouldn’t expect to see the annual fee or FX exchange fees mentioned, so we’ll have to wait and see on those.

  • Joseph’s mum says:

Does anybody remember what the intro offer was re Avios collecting please? Relative newbie , this was my first card and I used it (a lot!) in Florida last year but comments re Avios not posting incorrectly made me check my old statements online . Felt sure that there was a double points when you spend for the first three months or something similar but can’t seem to find anything about it…? Thanks

    • Lev441 says:

If you were referred you got 4,500 Avios and then it was double Avios points (up to £2,500 a month) for the first 6 months..

      • Lev441 says:

But the double points were on on the amex

        • Joseph’s mum says:

Thank you! I’ll check later . Fingers crossed they messed it up….!

        • Speedbird676 says:

It should be pretty easy to check. The statement showed the bonus Avios as a separate line to those earned from purchases.

    • Mark2 says:

Until fairly recently, a couple could refer each other and get 4,500 Avios each.

      • Rob says:

That stopped about 18 months ago. Shame as I was doing nicely out of it!

  • Lev441 says:

Another one bites the dust… the Lloyds cards has served me well over the years, have had some great Avios savings using the upgrade voucher – real sweet spot are the routes that use the ex BMI planes!

If I’ve calculated correctly, my new card year starts in August… may have just enough time to earn one more voucher….

I’m actually surprised that the card is staying open to be honest.. I’d have thought they would have just closed it for good – especially as it’s no longer available for new applications..

  • Neil says:

Thanks for the intel rob and for the update.

So I took out this card thecday you wrote about this being taken off the web for new applicants. As of this week, I hit my £7,000 spending target.

Does the voucher get posted into your Avios account the day of your monthly statement?! I’m not going to lie, with this news, I’ll be a lot more relieved when I see it posted as this was the reason I got it out. The double Avios for the 1st six months for the first £2,000 spent a month has also been useful!!

    • KevMc says:

The voucher will show in your Avios.com account within a week or two of hitting the £7k.

      • ADS says:

i hit the £7k target about a week ago – i’m nervously checking my Avios.com account each day. nothing yet. hopefully we won’t have to fight to get it !

        • Anna says:

If it doesn’t post, they can apply it manually. Might be worth giving them a call, you might be able to find out a bit more about the coming changes!

  • Doug M says:

Definitely will miss the voucher if it’s gone. I wouldn’t pay even £24 for this Avios earning rate, although if free FX remains I probably would, but given the earning rate on Avios is higher for foreign spend it rather suggests that free FX is going. I have the Saga free FX card as a fall back. I suppose I’d need about £3K abroad spend to ‘earn’ the 2400 Avios to offset the fee. No point in using this card in the UK if you have the BA PP.
I don’t know about collecting Virgin FC miles, I find all the value in BA is on short notice SH RFS, and Virgin don’t have that. Maybe of more interest when we find out how FB redemptions will work with Virgin.

  • Alan says:

I knew it was on the cards for this to go but thought they’d just close it altogether. I was hoping the contract still had a while to run – perhaps there’s a tiny chance the existing one may stay open for one and this is a new proposition they have?!

I can trigger another upgrade voucher any time I want with a few hundred spend) have purposely been leaving it at that stage as don’t need it yet). Next card anniversary is March though so looks like this’ll be my last one 🙁 Has been a fantastic voucher with lots of Avios saved over the years on off peak CW upgrades!

    Slightly OT

    Rob,

When you were at the Hilton thingy, did you find anything out about the Hilton Barclaycard that you can share ?

    • Rob says:

No. It was a bit chaotic and I couldn’t find any of the UK Hilton people. Only at the end, when 65% had left, did Mark Weinstein who is the head of HH mysteriously appear by my side to say Hi.

Last year was a different set up, as they let press in early so we had access to the Hilton people before everyone else charged in. This year everyone was let in at once.

  • Alan says:

OT (no bits but financial) – Starling just emailed this morning to say they’ve now enabled Push Provisioning for Google Pay, so you can start using your Starling card even before it arrives. They’ve also launched international payments, which potentially could be good for paying Amex ICC bills…

    • Lumma says:

Is the international payment thing not just for paying individuals overseas? It’s on the app right now but can’t check as they only allow it Monday to Friday

      • Alan says:

Don’t know – Revolut was no good before for this, was hoping Starling might have sorted it better.
