News in brief:

Amex / Park Hyatt ‘free night’ offer launched

Park Hyatt is, in my view, the most luxurious hotel brand which is part of major chain and which allows you to earn and redeem loyalty points.  (Sorry, The Ritz-Carlton.  But I know you are trying harder, such as in Kyoto.)

American Express is currently running a ‘buy two or three, get one free’ offer at Park Hyatt for cardmembers.  You can book this offer online which makes it easy to compare pricing with other Hyatt offers.

‘Stay 3, pay for 2’ is running at Park Hyatt Abu Dhabi, Busan, Changbaishan, Chicago, Hamburg, Hyderabad, New York, Siam Reap and Vienna.  23 other Park Hyatt hotels are doing ‘stay 4, pay for 3’.  The new New York hotel is not taking part.

You need to book by 28th February for stays between 1st January and 31st March.  Blackout dates may apply at certain properties.  Book at hyatt.com using promo code DPUK.

This offer was sent to Platinum and Centurion cardmembers via ‘Departures’ magazine but there is no restriction in the rules that you need to hold one of these cards in order to book.

No1 Lounges / Avios promotion closes

No1 Lounges has ended its long-running deal with Avios.  This was a very generous deal, as you could earn 750 Avios with every booking for a No1 Lounges site – and you got a cash discount on the usual price too!

Existing bookings will be honoured and will still receive their Avios.

The Virgin Flying Club offer with No1 Lounges is still going.  Take a look here for details and to book.

There is a tiered earning structure, per booking:

  • 400 miles at Clubrooms
  • 350 miles at No1 Lounges
  • 200 miles at My Lounge

The special Virgin Flying Club pricing is:

  • £25 – No1 Lounges
  • £12 – My Lounge
  • £35 – Clubrooms

As this is per booking, a couple should make two separate bookings and earn two lots of miles on both.

‘How To Land A Plane’ competition winners

Last Monday we ran a competition with Quercus Books following my review of Mark Vanhoenacker’s new book ‘How To Land A Plane’ a few weeks ago.

We had five copies of the book to give away, and the five winners are:

  • Alan R.
  • Caleb W.
  • Martin G.
  • Rupert P.
  • Zoltan I.

Hope you enjoy the book.

If you were not lucky enough to win one of the five copies, Amazon is still selling the book (which is hardback) for £3.99 which is even less than the Kindle version. The RRP is £9.99 for the hard copy version so you are getting a 60% discount.

Thanks for the good Park Hyatt offer. I think there may be a typo in the info – looks as if NYC is participating but I can’t seem to get Sydney to price up the rate so I think that may be the property opting out.

    • Rob says:

New York was not on the list I saw, but if it prices out I will remove the line.

  • TripRep says:

Wow, you rate Park Hyatt higher than Conrad or Waldorf Astoria?

By how much and why? Any particular favourite examples?

    • Tom C says:

PH Sydney and Vienna are spectacular properties, whereas Saigon, Mallorca, Siem Reap, Abu Dhabi are decent properties. Then you have other properties I have not been to that are highly rated, such as Maldives and Tokyo. I am not a massive fan of PH, yet I would easily pick them over Conrad or WA.

    • Talay says:

Park Hyatt in Tokyo takes some beating as a city hotel to be honest. I’ve been staying there since it opened and long before “Lost in Translation” fame.

Hyatt upgrades to suites were very well priced.

    • Rob says:

Yes, overall PH is a classier operation than either of those. I find a general sheen to them which is more akin to Four Seasons than Conrad. There are some less than great hotels in there but overall they are very well regarded.

  • Liz says:

OT Did anyone receive the Marriott pts from last night NFL tweet? I received the confirmation email but no pts – hubby didn’t receive email or pts. Usually post within the hour. Will chase up today but wondered if anyone else had problems.

    • Wally1976 says:

Mine don’t seem to have posted either :-(. One week off and it all goes Pete Tong!

    • Alex W says:

      Still waiting for mine too.

    • meta says:

I had the same problem two weeks ago. You need to wait 24 hours and then send them DM with you Marriott number. I also sent them the screenshot with the reply tweet, just in case. It took two minutes for them to respond and the points were in the account straight away.

    • Genghis says:

After not getting the points a few weeks ago, I now re-tweet every hour until I get the confirmation email and the points. Did it twice last night. Points posted straight away. Things I’ll do for £5 of points…

    • Alan says:

Have posted OK for me, Liz – although it did seem to take quite a bit longer to receive the success notification Tweet cf previous weeks.

      • Liz says:

Now received hubby’s points but not mine so have replied back to them with membership number .

Whilst there are good ambassadors and less good ones for the various international hotel groups, I personally have found the Jumeirah group to excel in service on every visit on every occasion at various properties around the world. The Sofitel brand of the Arora group give them a jolly good run for thier money.
As for the Ritz Carlton, I agree that not every property necessarily hits the bells amd whistles but……I am currently at the RC in Manama, Bahrain for the 9th time in 18 years. Club floor junior suite each time. We first came when it was a Royal Meridian and it was superb then in every way. Eighteen years later as an RC for the majority of that time, the ambience, attractiveness and service has maintained itself right at the top of the game. It is a superb example of ultra 5 star ambience and despite its longevity, the hotel retains its exciting ambience and exemplary service and does not look at all tired! On two visits we came for Christmas when our daughter was younger; the Christmas Day lunch buffet in the grand ballroom took our breath away……. we came back the following year for Xmas too!
Keep it up Ritz Carlton, Bahrain…….

    • Rob says:

I agree, we (ie my family) stay a lot with Jumeirah although I rarely review them on here. Stayed at Etihad Towers, Emirates Towers, Carlton Tower, Dar Al Masyaf (about 100 nights!), Mina, Zabeel Saray (reviewed it early this year) and the weird dump near Dubai airport. I don’t think we can really call them a major chain though.

  • Graham Walsh says:

OT – I requested a status match from my new IHG status of Spire Elite to Club Carlson top level and was denied as they only do it once.

Thank you for being a Club Carlson Gold Elite member!

We offer a one time status match. It appears you have been given a status match 4/14/2017 based on your IHG Platinum membership.

  • Tim W says:

What’s the “Departures” magazine? I have a Platinum charge card and a BA Premium card, but have never had a magazine that I remember.

    • Graham Walsh says:

Mine arrived last week. Maybe drop them a tweet @ DeparturesMag and ask to be on their mailing list.

      • Rob says:

I imagine you’ve ticked a ‘no marketing’ box somewhere and therefore been taken off. It is actually pretty good, a sort of Conde Nast Traveller / Sunday Times Travel Magazine clone.

        • Alan says:

I only flick through it to see if there’s any deals Amex have forgotten to tell me about – find the actual content pretty dreadful but then I’m not really in the market for Swiss watches, etc. so perhaps not their target audience!

  • Tilly says:

OT – just had email from BA about 50% avios redemption sale. Only in WT cabin though, not even WTP.

  • Dominic says:

    OT

So, was basically accused of stealing someone’s credit cards in Bem Brasil yesterday. Paid the bill using 4 amex cards and had to show him the promo email and my driving licence before he was convinced!

Hoping staff in other shops are more clued up about small shop!

    • mark2 says:

I used 13 in one purchase this morning. Will be using 16 in two others.
