Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

EXCEPTIONAL DEAL: Heathrow to Melbourne Class, Business, £1084 return

This is almost certainly the best Black Friday deal out there, but it was kept very low key and I didn’t become aware of it until last night.

Garuda Indonesia is selling Heathrow to Melbourne for £1084 return in Business Class.

This is ludicrously low.

Garuda 777

Even better, Garuda is an impressive carrier with a very good business class cabin.  Here is my review of Garuda’s business class seating.

The details of this offer are:

London to Sydney / Melbourne for a headline price of £1111 (actually £1084)

First Class is also available for £2036 return

Book by Wednesday 30th November

Travel by 30th June 2017

The Garuda website has the details here.

Garuda Business Class

However ….. this fare is tricky to book.  Sydney has most people beaten.

Over at Flyertalk (the thread on this deal is here), one poster has the answer for Melbourne:

Use the Multi City booking option

First flight:  London to Melbourne, departing on a Tuesday or Sunday

Second flight:  Melbourne to Jakarta, departing on a Saturday

Third flight:  Jakarta to London, departing on a Sunday

You must select the Garuda flights, not the codeshares at every stage

I had no trouble getting £1,084 for London to Melbourne on my first try, selecting dates in April.

Garuda Indonesia is a member of SkyTeam so you can credit this flight to a variety of frequent flyer programmes including Flying Blue, the KLM / Air France programme.

  • HIDeHi says:

There is also a £600-£700ish AF/KLM deal from Helsinki to NYC in J.

  • James A says:

I was finally able to price this, but the wife vetoed it

    • Henry says:

      Same here…….on safety grounds!!

      • HIDeHi says:

I think Melbourne is not as dangerous as it used to be 😉

        • Sam says:

This is because of a blanket ban on the countries CAA, not reflective on each individual airlines safety record. Airlines have to apply individually to be removed from the EU blacklist due to the unique nature of the country’s ban, so obviously most do not as only 1 flies to the EU. Garuda have had to pull out all the stops to be removed, and the current airline is a long, long way from the Garuda of the past. Otherwise they wouldn’t be able to satisfy the EU,and wouldn’t be flying out of LHR. I’d suggest there are many, many more airlines that are riskier, including some European ones. I’m very wary of what airlines I fly, and veto my family flying on some (including a certain Indonesian carrier), but they have flown on Garuda many times. They were an eye opener for me long haul and short haul in J and Y. If only all carriers were that good? I’d only put a couple of airlines above them in Y for sure (probably just SQ).

        • Lady London says:

Sam what’s your view of the safety of the various Chinese airlines? e.g. China Southern

        • the real harry says:

          Thanks for that clarification, Sam

& which are the riskiest European airlines in your view?

  • Louie says:

Would suit me perfectly and no issues with LHR – MEL and MEL – CGK but no availability CGK to LHR on the dates I am looking at. Do you know if they are doing anything similar starting anywhere else in Europe?

  • Phillip says:

Miles can also be credited to Etihad!

  • B G says:

Anyone found any dates in xmas period that work? those seem to be all gone…

  • Sam says:

I did 56 hours on Garuda in June – including LHR-CGK in J. It was an *outstanding* experience on board brand new 777-300W – excellent food, service, entertainment, wifi, I cannot recommend it enough. You might have issues with the lounges being not up to scratch, but if you’re flying to MEL then hopefully it’s the onboard experience that matters.

The other 38 hours were in Y – they were also outstanding. Lots of 2 hour domestics in 737’s with seat back TV’s and full meal service (albeit mainly rice dishes which got a bit boring). And to put their old reputation to bed – 8 or 9 flights, only delay was at LHR due to thunderstorms.

  • Nick says:

Any chance this is a mistake fare?

  • Sam says:

No! They have a splash page purely about this fare!! Also they have had £1,200 in J to Singapore recently as well.
