Alitalia now using the Etihad lounge in T4 – get free status with your BA Silver or Gold card

Etihad took pseudo control of struggling Italian flag carrier Alitalia earlier this year.

If you need to fly to Italy on a regular basis, the good news is that from 1st December you can now use the Etihad lounge in Heathrow Terminal 4.

I reviewed the Etihad Heathrow lounge here.   It isn’t as good as the Qatar Airways lounge but it certainly isn’t bad (I am back there next week as it happens).  For a short-haul lounge, it will be fantastic.  You will be getting very high quality food, served at your table, as well as access to free treatments at the Six Senses Spa.

It isn’t yet clear exactly who gets access and who will be remaining in the SkyTeam lounge.  Freccia Alata Plus members are definitely getting in.  It is not clear if Freccia Alata (middle tier) or general Alitalia business class customers can also use the Etihad facilities.

Don’t forget your Alitalia status match

The reason I mentioned this story is that, in case you haven’t done it yet, Alitalia is currently offering a status match to British Airways Executive Club Gold and Silver members as well as other top-tier and middle-tier status holders with other airlines.

The scheme

The Alitalia frequent flyer scheme is called MilleMiglia.  There are four elite levels.

As a British Airways Gold, you will be matched to Freccia Alata Plus.  This level is equivalent to SkyTeam Elite Plus which is the equivalent of oneworld Emerald.

As a British Airways Silver, you will be matched to Freccia Alata.   This is ALSO considered to be SkyTeam Elite Plus.  This means that you would get worldwide lounge access with SkyTeam except on US domestic flights with Delta.  It isn’t yet clear if it gets you into the Etihad lounge when flying on Alitalia.  It does get you in when flying on Etihad.

Why you should do this even if you never fly Alitalia

Alitalia is now a member of two airline alliances.

The formal membership is with SkyTeam.  Your Freccia Alata Plus card would get you top tier privileges, including lounge access (except on domestic Delta flights in the US, I think), with the following airlines:

  • Aeroflot
  • AerolineasArgentinas
  • AeroMexico
  • AirEuropa
  • Air France
  • Alitalia
  • China Airlines
  • China Eastern
  • China Southern
  • Czech Airlines
  • Delta
  • Garuda Indonesia
  • Kenya Airways
  • KLM
  • Korean Air
  • MEA
  • Saudia
  • Tarom
  • Vietnam Airlines
  • Xiamen Air

Alitalia is also a member of Etihad Airways Partners.  This is not yet finalised, but the eventual plan is that a status holder with any of the following airlines – all of which have received equity investment from Etihad – will have reciprocal privileges with the others.

  • Etihad
  • Jet Airways
  • airberlin
  • Air Serbia
  • Air Seychelles
  • Etihad Regional

Alitalia also has partnerships with GOL, Malaysia and Qantas but I’m not sure if they offer any benefits for Alitalia top tier cardholders.

There is another reason to get a match.  You never know when there might be an opportunity to match your Alitalia status to a different Star Alliance or oneworld airline!

How do I get a status match?

You need to email a scan of your British Airways Gold card and your MilleMiglia account number (so you need to open an account first) to statusmatchmillemiglia@alitalia.com.

Here are the rules:

You have until 31st December 2015 to ask for a match

The match will last until March 2016 UNLESS your existing status card shows an expiry date beyond March 2016.  If it does, your matched card will be issued until March 2017.

ANY elite status card from an airline which is not part of the SkyTeam alliance will be accepted

I just spoke to them and the fellow said it was a transfer, so would cancel out my BA status. Is that just one guy incorrect or have I missed the whole point? Assming it is an error and match means AS WELL AS rather than INSTED OF, my BA year ends mid march, but I’ve well hit the “gold retained” this year. Is it just a case of screenshots and pleading to get the 2017 match? Many thanks in advance.

    • Rob says:

Eh? Obviously Alitalia cannot rescind your BA status!

      • Rupert says:

Many thanks, I couldn’t imagine any value to such a trade, but I’m a newbie to this game and the bloke gave a whole spiel on it! Learned a HUGE amount from you on this site. Thanks.

Has anyone based in the uk figured out how to match to air Berlin with their German, Swiss, Austrian address requirement? I have enough airline status cards to allow a match to air Berlin but have been rejected due to their address requirement. Any creative suggestions anyone? 😉

    Thanks!

I was going to ask the same question!
      How do people do it?.

    • The_Real_A says:

Doesnt your company have an office in Switzerland? Or dont they intend to open one?

My AirBerline status match is coming in handy 🙂

      • DW201 says:

What am I missing? Isnt airberlin oneworld (hence low tax redemptions) so BA status applies??

How to update AZ account information?

I upgraded my basic Alitalia account to Freccia Alta Plus by status match to BA Gold. I cannot access my AZ details online, probably because my ancient AZ membership predated online accounts.

Trying ‘forgot password’, I get the response that they sent it to my e-mail account. Problem: I checked e-mail accounts, nothing received; phoning and e-mail elicits the demand to send my details BY FAX. Remember faxes, I barely do. Saying I have no fax produces the response ‘go to a shop and use theirs’ (!) which could be OK except if AZ respond by fax.

Any ideas as to how to access my online account? Thanks.

    • Alan says:

I doubt they’ll reply by fax – another option would be to use one of the email to fax services online, or lots of multifunction printers have the capability built-in.

Sadly in medicine faxes are still very much in use, although on the upside they are more secure being point-to-point over the phone network!

      • Roger says:

Thanks. You reminded me that I have an old receive-only fax number. Must fire it up and see whether I can use it for the reply address. 🙂

OT: BA have launched their annual Business sale over Christmas. Destinations include lots of US destinations (NYC, LAX, MIA, BOS, ORD, MIA etc) as well as the usual ME, Asia and Carribean destinations at various price points. Fares start from £1,400 return in J from LON (to NYC), and are a fair bit cheaper ex-DUB (sub £1k). Also able to use part pay by avios to drop LON to NYC for £700 return and 30,000 avios. Only downside is dates are restrictive, book by 30th November, travel from 21st Dec to 1st Jan 2016 and return by 11th Jan

OT* on the MBNA ETIHAD application page, there is no mention of the 20,000 BONUS, only 5,000 is quoted! how comes? anyone recently applied for it?

      • Rob says:

You will often find that the MBNA site has a different offer to the airline site. Go to etihad.com and the offer shows on the home page, you can click through from there and apply OK.

  • Anthony Dunn says:

With the fire at Fiumicino earlier this year burning down the uninspiring old BA lounge, this is a handy way of ensuring lounge access in the interim – until the replacement is built at some point.

    • Lady London says:

Just wondering did someone get that annoyed with the old BA lounge for that to happen then ? 🙂

  • Fraser says:

Freccia Alata also seems to offer four short haul or two long haul business class upgrade vouchers. Has anyone had success using these?

    • Bob says:

I was offered free upgrades (Business For You) once matched to Freccia Alata but only for more expensive booking classes so it cannot be used for upgrading from the lowest fares unfortunately.

  • imbruce says:

Is there anyway of getting off BAEC Blue without flying?
Not sure when I can actually get away O/S within the next 12 months

  • AndyGWP says:

I’ve matched against my silver when you first announced this… now turns out I am going to hit gold in the next few weeks so will be interesting to see if they will “re-match” me 🙂
