Some Black Friday deals which are already launched

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

I am not a fan of Black Friday deals, to put it mildly.  However, I get a feeling that the travel industry will be hitting it hard this year given the impact on bookings from the recent events in Paris and Brussels.

Here are the first few – I will fill you in during the week as more are launched:

Melia Hotels – 30% to 45% discounts depending on city (London is 45% which includes the funky ME London and the more traditional White House), booking already open via this link and runs to 30th November for stays until February

Expedia – beating the rush with a 72-hour sale which starts today, more details here

Hotels.com – have an interesting Black Friday one-day offer which I will mention nearer the time as I think it is meant to be secret

Air New Zealand – selling 100 economy flights to Los Angeles for £199 return.  This offer will not actually go live until Monday 30th November although, if you don’t fancy your chances, I believe that there will be other offers available on Friday.

Opodo – until Monday 30th, everyone who books a flight via the site will be entered into a draw for Wonka-style Gold and Silver tickets.  Your chances of winning a Gold prize are not huge but there are “tens of thousands” of £50 flight vouchers available as Silver prizes.  If you are booking a flight this week and Opodo is the same price, you may want to book it via this link as your chance of winning a £50 voucher should be pretty decent.

More Black Friday deals as I get them ….

The machines I’ve tried have all churned out great pancakes. We should lobby BA to introduce them in their lounges as it would be a genuine enhancement to breakfast catering. The new NZ lounge in SYD has one but I was gutted to find the new AKL intl lounge doesn’t.

    • Oh! Matron! says:

Edible food would be a great enhancement!

I don’t get why people complain so much about the food. its free.
        Breakfast
they have a good fruit salad & yogurts, juices, the bacon rolls are ok, the cheese and tom things are weird granted. but there is always cereal and a good selection of pastries. What do people normally have for breakfast at home???

I had a Holiday Inn Express breakfast today and it was perfectly fine, albeit I gave the scrambled eggs / sausages / beans a wide berth because the scrambled egg was a really odd shade of yellow, the likes of which I had never seen before (ie bordering on green). I also had to pour away the capuccino that spat out of the machine because it dispensed normal coffee and then sprayed some milk foam on top!

No problems with the fruit, yoghurts, cereal or toast though. I also had a decent curry for a tenner last night in the bar!

Was generally OK and had real cutlery – I remember doing a mattress run at a UK HIX a couple of years ago and they were giving out paper plates and paper bowls.

Worth noting that the hotel had the fastest and most reliable wi-fi I have had in a hotel for quite a while.

I’d agree about HIX WiFi – managed to stream Sky Go content on my iPad at the one in Northampton the other weekend.

The sausages okay by the way, and the scrambled egg is not bad if you get it ‘fresh’ 🙂

          • Andrew says:

Oh yeah, polystyrene plates/bowls and plastic cutlery at the new HIX Kailua-Kona were rather tacky, but as one was in Hawai’i one had completely forgotten how to complain…

It’s not exactly free as most people will be paying for it somewhere along the line, for people who pay for a visit pass their dreams of free luxury food will fade quickly, if your looking for a low carb option it doesn’t exist!

OT: for anybody considering the virgin-ihg transfer for spire I can confirm that it is still working as of today. However, my transfer took 12 days so best not to leave it too close to end of year.

    • Liz says:

      Have you finally made it!

      • James67 says:

Yes, all I need now is the right pointsbreaks at the right time. Failing that I’ll settle for an IC and CP night. I believe there is a new Indigo someplace in London so perhaps a deal to be had there. My remaining 20k FC miles will be converted into 30k hilton and I’ll buy 10k for $70 and then probably redeem for 5 nights at hampton Newcastle or save for next KL Doubletree stay.

    • Wilson says:

Is it better to wait till early 2016 to get the status till end of 2017?

Just scared they’ll pull the plug on this by that time!!

      • James67 says:

Probably bit I jumped now as I was also afraid FC and/or ihg may change rules. Also, wasn’t sure i could make 75k next year to qualify.

  • @mkcol says:

Have you seen the waffle machines in Hampton by Hiltons? A bit more manual effort required, but still tasty!

    • Tom says:

Yep – pleasantly surprised at Hampton Newport on a 5k point redemption!

      • flyforfun says:

Found one in Hampton Inn Vancouver. Had a bit of a knack to it but got it down right. It was the best sweet and hot option there as the other hot items were akin to what you’d get at McDonalds. Also I think on Sundays they had real maple syrup but on other days it was imitation syrup. Pretty poor effort from the land of the maple tree!

I think it was the King Hotel in Munich that I first discovered one of these machines and the batter was definitely better as was everything else on their groaning buffet.

  • tall trader says:

Omg a pancake machine! No need to find a wife anymore 🙂

  • Scott says:

Any more details on the Air NZ offer? Thanks

  • SimonB says:

Ha – funny! This is one of your more random posts, Rob. I have seen them often in US where, as you can imagine, the “line” to use it usually renders the effort to get said pancake pointless.

  • Stuart says:

The Holiday Inn York also has a pancake maker, I was more happy than I should have been to discover it.

  • Gavin says:

Fond memories of the waffle maker at the HI Coral Gables a few years ago
