News in brief:

British Airways launches three new European routes

British Airways has announced three new routes for next Summer:

  • Biarritz (photo of Hotel du Palais below) – twice weekly from 1st May
  • Mahon, Menorca – four times weekly from 29th April
  • Palermo, Sicily – twice weekly from 30th April

All will depart from Heathrow Terminal 5.  Avios and cash tickets should be available soon on ba.com if they are not already there by the time you read this.  Remember that availability for Avios will be excellent as it always is with brand new routes, even for peak dates.

In other news, Hanover is moving to Terminal 5 from Terminal 3 on 27th March.

Excellent Osaka deal with KLM / Air France

Air France and KLM, until Thursday, have an excellent business class deal from the UK to Osaka in Japan.

Travel between 1st December and 29th February and your ticket will cost just £1,050!  This is the cost from your local UK airport served by KLM or Air France – you don’t need to position yourself in Europe first, although of course you need to change planes in Paris or Amsterdam.

The cheapest fares are from London City.  Departing from Heathrow, Manchester etc seems to add another £50.  No Avios to be earned – you would be crediting to the Air France / KLM Flying Blue programme, which lets you book across the Skyteam alliance.

You can even cancel your flight if necessary, subject to a £300 fee.  Full details on the KLM website here – click on ‘Osaka on Sale’.

Remember that Japan Airlines is a oneworld member so you could use Avios to connect to Tokyo or elsewhere.

Get 1,000 Avios with a Kaligo.com hotel booking

Finally, hotel booking service Kaligo.com is offering 1,000 bonus Avios with every hotel booking made this month.  This is on top of the standard Avios you earn.

This isn’t as good as some of their recent offers, but if you are making a hotel booking – especially a low value one – this could work out nicely.

Remember that you won’t get points or stay credit in a hotel loyalty scheme for rooms booked via Kaligo.com so it is best to choose a booking where you would otherwise have no status or would not collect points anyway.

    bits Amex Shop Small promo due in 4-5 weeks, don’t go cancelling spare Amex cards just yet.

        Following Brian’s link, confirmed by Amex as kicking off 5th December 2015, should be better than ever.

        Last year we got £5 off haircuts, many rounds of drinks, lots of food etc.

        Does anybody remember if any Amex cards were not included? (MBNA definitely WAS included.)

    We’ve blagged a Virgin Wines* deal (for Virgin Wines virgins only) to get 12 bottles of wine for half the usual price, but this requires a subscription (that you can cancel). As that can be a bit of a pain, we’ve also arranged a second deal with no subscription, but with only 10 bottles.

    Offer 1: 12 bottles for £56 via a subscription

    Newbies joining Virgin’s subscription-based Discovery Club get their first case of 12 bottles of wine for £55.87 (£47.88 plus £7.99 delivery) via this special link*. It works out at £4.66 a bottle and at full-price without the club membership, a case is £112.87 with delivery.

    Warning: After the first case, you’ll be automatically billed for a case EVERY THREE MONTHS at £89.99 plus £7.99 delivery (£8.17 a bottle) unless you cancel – which can be done at any time – but do wait until you’ve got your case. You’ll be sent an email letting you know the date your next case will be dispatched, at which point you can either cancel your membership or skip the individual case.

    Offer 2: 10 bottles for £58 – no subscription

    Here, you’re just buying it straight, with no monthly commitment. You’ll get 10 bottles of wine* for £57.98 (£49.99 plus £7.99 delivery) instead of the full-price £110.89 with delivery (five reds, five whites, see ‘more info’ below for the full list).

    This is the option to go for if you want a straightforward, one-off deal and are concerned you may forget to cancel a subscription. It works out as £5.80 a bottle instead of £4.66 a bottle above.

    Slightly OT, with Hilton it seems to let me book using points two different hotels on the same night. In terms of qualifying for status would I get credit for both hotels of course provided I checked into both!

      Sounds like a yes. Why would they bar you, even if they were cute enough to know? – which I doubt.

      You could be booking in a brother etc.

      No, you can’t get credit for stays at 2 properties on the same night, cash or points.

      You cannot even book 2 rooms at the same hotel because you only get stay credit for one of them, although (for cash bookings) you’d earn points on both as long as the bills were merged.

      Starwood is better for this – you can stay credit for 3 rooms per night.
