Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Lufthansa news – free miles, cheap miles and 500 miles

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

I don’t write an article about Lufthansa‘s Miles & More programme for a while and then three mileage things come along at once.

Deal 1 – 1,000 free Miles & More miles from Sixt

Via this website, you are promised 1,000 Miles & More miles if you sign up to receive email newsletters from car hire group Sixt.

The small print says that the offer is targeted to those who were emailed about it.  This may be true, but in general these offers work for anyone who signs up (although don’t complain to Sixt if you don’t get them).

The website is in German but Google Chrome will translate it automatically if you get stuck.

Deal 2 – 500 bonus Miles & More miles with Accor hotels

I wrote recently about a ‘triple miles’ offer that Avios was running with Accor.  This is the Miles & More version.

Set your Le Club Accorhotels account to automatically send your points to Miles & More, and you will receive 500 bonus miles on your next Novotel / Mercure / M Gallery / Sofitel / Ibis etc stay.

Further details can be found on the Accor website here.  Your stay must be completed by 30th April.

There is a 1, 2 or 4 night minimum stay requirement depending on brand.

Deal 3 – 1,000 bonus miles for travellers in Copenhagen

OK.  This is a VERY niche deal.  However, it might provide a bit of amusement to pass the time if you are in Copenhagen airport during 2014.

As per this promotion, you will receive 1,000 Miles & More miles EVERY time you make a purchase in one of the Heinemann duty free shops in Copenhagen.  You are limited to one purchase per day, but you can claim it multiple times on different trips.

However, to try to stop you buying something very cheap, there are the following exclusions:

“Offer extends to entire product range, with the exception of duty-paid tobacco products, beverages in returnable bottles, magazines, newspapers and books”

I’m sure, for the dedicated Head for Points reader, a suitable low-value loophole could be found.

How to earn Star Alliance miles from UK credit cards

How to earn Star Alliance miles from UK credit cards (April 2025)

None of the Star Alliance airlines currently have a UK credit card.

There is, however, still a way to earn Star Alliance miles from a UK credit card

The route is via Marriott Bonvoy. Marriott Bonvoy hotel loyalty points convert to over 40 airlines at the rate of 3:1.

The best way to earn Marriott Bonvoy points is via the official Marriott Bonvoy American Express card. It comes with 20,000 points for signing up and 2 points for every £1 you spend. At 2 Bonvoy points per £1, you are earning (at 3:1) 0.66 airline miles per £1 spent on the card.

There is a preferential conversion rate to United Airlines – which is a Star Alliance member – of 2 : 1 if you convert 60,000 Bonvoy points at once.

The Star Alliance members which are Marriott Bonvoy transfer partners are: Aegean, Air Canada, Air China, Air New Zealand, ANA, Asiana Airlines, Avianca, Copa Airlines, Singapore Airlines, TAP Air Portugal, Thai Airways, Turkish Airlines and United Airlines.

You can apply here.

5cl bottles of spirits? Not checked Copenhagen but most airport ‘duty free’ outlets stock them.

    About £2.

  • Johnny5a says:

I’m in CPH soon, so I will have a scoot round to see what I can come up with but the chewing gum seems plausable

    • Johnny5a says:

I assume I can get something on arrival and something when I leave

      • squills says:

The Tax Free Shop at Copenhagen Airport
In Tax Free you can order Tax Free products and pick them up when departing from Copenhagen Airport. If you are traveling within the EU, you can also pick up your Tax Free products when arriving at Copenhagen Airport.

  • Felixstowe Flyer says:

I haven”t got a miles and more account but could shift some of my future flights there rather than Aegean. Is the best use of m and m long haul? Also slightly OT do they ask for your company registration if you apply for their partner plus scheme? I don’t have a company yet but fancy the idea of using the points for a business upgrade!

    • Rob says:

Upgrade, I imagine, will only be from a flexible economy ticket (ie the sort companies buy) rather than a cheap one

    • John says:

TBH there is no real good use of M&M if you don’t fly a lot. If you are currently crediting to A3 that means you can’t be earning too many miles per year…
LH / LX F would be a nice redemption which may even be worth buying miles, if the prices and dates are right

      • Felixstowe Flyer says:

Thanks for your thoughts. I credit Aegean to keep my gold status but wasn’t sure of the redemption ease. Also more opportunities for m & m earning but only of use if the redemptions are any good. May look more at United.

  • Anders says:

I don’t have a Miles & More account at present, but the CPH deal might make it worth signing up. What’s the best use for M&M miles?

    • Czechoslovakia says:

I only use the on Lufthansa`s worldshop, as redemptions have taxes so high, its usually cheaper to book a cash ticket. Upgrades seem poor value compared to Avios, too.

      • idrive says:

I have a long time M&M account and I have just reached my target ( which I will keep as a backup pot for long haul purposes). I do not think these offers above are worth starting collecting at all.
You might want to start if you fly long haul at least 1/2 times in 2/3 years by accident (a flight that you happen to buy for any reason, rather than buying an Avios or else qualifying ticket).
these might be good for top up or for arbitrage as advised but you much are you likely to be in Copenhagen Airport more than once over the next month? i prefere the Heathrow Rewards deal at some point!

        • scottnothing says:

On that note – am pleased to report that the 1000 Heathrow Rewards Points for £10 spend featured by Raffles on this site on 20 Feb worked for me. Bonus points credited the same day as the transaction. Thanks!

  • Idrive says:

    I agree! Nice one!

  • Alan says:

I agree probably not worth collecting M&M just in these offers if you’re not going to have ongoing earnings, but their credit card is currently offering an 11,500 mile signup bonus which would be a good kickstart to things!

  • idrive says:

1500 not 11,500, where did you get that info? BTW I got that card and it’s the only way. though, that would be an opportunity cost in terms of Avios/AA. the point is: it’s worth collecting to increment a position you hold.
I decided to go ahead as I had a couple of Thai flights already
With current credit card offering (Virgin on Top+Amexes) , i would not duplicate it now.

    • Alan says:

It said 11,500 in the email they sent me. I forwarded it to Rob so he may cover it in a future post!

      • idrive says:

I can read it on the Lufthansa website, not on the MBNA. if you try to apply, it does not quote 10000 bonus but only 1500, so far

      • Rob says:

Yes, it is definitely 11,500! I will run it on Monday, hopefully the application site is ok by then.

  • idrive says:

i see it, but MBNA did not update their page yet.
i would still do not consider it, UNLESS you have a big pot of expiring miles you want to keep and can not spend by due date.
