Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Get a 20% bonus when you transfer Nectar points to Avios – worth it?

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

Avios has launched a conversion bonus for anyone sitting on a pile of Nectar points.

This seems slightly cheeky, given that it is only two weeks since the conversion rate in the other direction – from Avios to Nectar – was devalued with no notice (click to read more). The new rate is 400 Avios to 400 Nectar points.

Let’s take a look at the deal. Full details are on ba.com here.

Get a 20% bonus when you transfer Nectar points to Avios

The standard conversion rate of Nectar points to Avios is 400 : 250.

As a Nectar point is worth 0.5p when spent at Sainsburys, Argos, eBay etc, you are giving up £2 of free shopping in return for 250 Avios. In other words, you are buying Avios for 0.8p. This is a decent deal.

Until 7th April, you will receive a 20% bonus on every transfer INTO Avios.

(For clarity, there is no bonus in the opposite direction. The rate from Avios into Nectar remains at the devalued 400:400.)

This looks pretty attractive. For every 400 Nectar points you convert, you will now receive 300 Avios.

Put another way, you are giving up £2 of free shopping to earn 300 Avios, so you are ‘paying’ 0.66p per Avios. It’s an excellent return.

If you happen to be sitting on a pile of Nectar points with no real plan for them, you should seriously think about this deal.

What is the small print?

There doesn’t seem to be much, which is good.

The offer runs to 7th April.

Transfers must be in multiples of 400 Nectar points.

You can make multiple transfers in that period and get the 20% bonus on all of them.

You do NOT receive the bonus immediately. It will post within 28 days of the offer ending on 7th April.

It seems that anyone who auto-converts their Nectar points into Avios will receive the bonus automatically.

As per the comments below, the bonus is not posting instantly. We don’t know when it will be added.

The usual caps apply – you can transfer a maximum of 80,000 Nectar points into Avios per calendar month. This means that you could earn the bonus on a maximum of 160,000 Nectar points, as you could transfer 80,000 into Avios in March and a further 80,000 in early April.

You can see full details on ba.com here.

It won’t let me transfer from Nectar to Avios, but looks like i can in reverse. It brings up a message saying that there is a problem with my Nectar account and to contact Nectar. I just did an online chat and they didn’t really know what was going on. I’ve tried different browsers etc too. Any other ideas?

    • Joe says:

Contact the Nectar Twitter team via DM – I had the same problem for months. Issue is that redemptions on your Nectar account are suspended (concerns re security of account). I had to set up a new account and transfer the points over – it took a while, but it is now fixed. The alternative is that they remove the block on redemptions, but you are then on your own if the points are stolen – I suppose OK if you are going to immediately transfer all to Avios.

  • Brian says:

I have a weekly auto transfer set up from Nectar to Avios but it’s just Sainsburys+Esso points. Makes you wonder if you should let points sit in the bank and wait until some kind of offer comes along though to maximise benefits. But who knows when they’ll come?

  • PeterK says:

If someone from BA could confirm the bonus is added later rather than instantly then this might swing more people to convert larger quantities..

    • Mark says:

Has anyone read the terms and conditions?

“All bonus awards will be made within 28 days of the campaign end date.”

It may not actually say “its not instant”, but it’s strongly implied and backed up by all the reports here. What it does tell is that you’ll get the bonus points by early May.

  • Bloomy says:

    800 nectar converted to 500 avios using auto-convert. no bonus! 😢 😎

  • Chris says:

1200 nectar points auto transferred today into Avios but only 750 Avios points added to my account?
I can’t see how they are going to track all of these transactions after 7th April
It doesn’t give you much confidence when the bonus is not applied automatically at the time of transfer.
Even more work for the BA complaints team!

    • Martyn says:

It is a matter of opinion but I think this is a good opportunity, feel entirely confident in the process and have just transferred over about 50,000 nectar points.

    • Jason says:

Have been stung by Nectar before not giving me bonus nectar points when applying for the Nectar AMEX when it was on promotion. Certainly extremely sceptical now given I’m about to convert a very large amount to Avios!

  • Manya says:

Will the converted nectar be eligible for the usual purchase of AVIOS balance boost?

  • FFoxSake says:

New T&Cs confirm 20% bonus Avios will be posted “within 28 days” after April 7th.
